A Post-editing Practice Report On Machine Translation For Shop Manual CBF190WH（excerpts）

In recent years,the rise of machine translation has brought great convenience to people’s life and more and more enterprises and individuals begin to use machine translation.The combination of machine translation and post-editing not only greatly improves the efficiency of translation,but also reduces the cost of translation.However,at this stage,machine translation still has certain limitations,and there are many problems that need to be solved by the academic community.Based on the practice of translation of CBF190 shop manual,this paper summarizes the typical problems of machine translation in the project.By summarizing the work done in the post-editing stage of machine translation,this paper puts forward the corresponding correction methods,hoping to provide some substantive help for the post-editing of machine translation in the translation of vehicle maintenance manuals.The paper is divided into four chapters: “Introduction”,“Translation Process”,“Case Study” and “Summary”.Through the post-editing process,the deficiencies of machine translation were found at the lexical level and syntax level.Through case analysis,the problems of machine translation are summarized and corresponding strategies are proposed.First of all,at the lexical level,machine translation has problems such as mistranslation of terms,mistranslation of common words,improper translation of abbreviations,under-translation and over-translation of words,inability to omit or replace pronouns,and inability to add category words.For the problems at lexical level:Firstly,learn some knowledge of related industries.Consulting professionals,verifying online and making full use of parallel texts can make up for the lack of industry knowledge;Secondly,following the two basic non-literary translation principles of“accurate translation” and “smooth expression”;Thirdly,for mistranslation of common word,under-translation and over-translation,inappropriate translation of abbreviation,pronoun and category word,translators need to correctly understand the context of the original text,and translators can adopt alternative methods such as replacing words,changing the part of words,adopting the original text and giving explanation,so as to strive to achieve accurate and clear expression.At the syntactic level,machine translation has problems such as disorder of sentence components,improper translation of passive sentence,improper translation of special sentence tone,and incoherent problems of sentences.For the problems at syntactic level,which are occurred since machine translation can not well identify the components and syntactic structures of the sentences,can be solved by adjusting word order,breaking sentences,exchanging “active” and “passive” tenses and adding words with connecting effect;for problems of tone of special sentences,by adding “please”or “do not” to weaken or increase the strong tone.To sum up,the combination of machine translation and post-editing can be used to translate texts in professional industries.Furthermore,guided by the principles of scientific and technological translation,translators can adopt practical and effective translation strategies so as to more quickly and accurately complete the translation tasks of professional industries.
