| The Sahel,a region of Africa located between the Sahara and the savannah,has experienced an unprecedented security crisis posed by terrorism for more than a decade.This crisis,which has its origins in historical and current factors,has destroyed the entire region’s security environment.This security crisis has had enormous consequences,resulting in the loss of human lives and thousands of families displaced.With the fall of Libya’s Gaddafi regime in 2011,the region insecurity has increased in leap and bounds,with several terrorist groups taken refuge in the Sahel region while endangering the Republic of Chad’s national security.Since 2013 due to Chad’s strategic position in Sahel,Chad has conducted several military engagements with regional member states of the region to address the growing threat of terrorism.Despite this growing commitment,terrorist attacks have continued with the increasingly Islamist sect Boko Haram(an organisation operating in the Lake Chad Basin).Even with France and the United States active military security engagement in combating terrorism in the Sahel region,instability persists.Why is the happening?What is responsible for the recurring insecurity in the region?We employed the national security frame of analysis and generated data qualitatively through the secondary sources,and analysed using narrative techniques to understand the region’s insecurity.The findings revealed that the Sahel region’s instability is twofold:the diverse national security of Sahel members and Chad’s internal and external challenges.Thus,we recommend the harmonisation of regional security by members and the need to address social justice and human development in Chad... |
