Yang-ba-shi:the Path To Integrate Into The City—A Case Study Of Dongxiang People In Lanzhou City

Yang-ba-shi is the name of people who are proficient in slaughtering,dismantling and trading sheep.There is a Yang-ba-shi group which is comprised of Dongxiang people in Qilihe district of Lanzhou city.Since they began to slaughter and sell halal mutton in the 1980 s,they have gradually formed a new urban group with unique ethnic and regional characteristics.And now they nearly have a virtual monopoly in this area of trade.Accordingly I chose to do a fieldwork in Yang-ba-shi’s district,and try to find the answer that how do they establish the mutton supply industry,what is its formation path.,and how does this era influence their business and industrial structure.Through analyzing the field survey data,from one hand I found that the Yang-ba-shi have completed the transition from the first generation to the second generation.So the formation path of their industry has an obvious mark of diachrony.On the other hand,the process of constructing industry network is the process of guiding the cultural reproduction of Dongxiang.Thus,the dissertation is going to analyse and discuss main details from the following four aspects.First of all,I focus on the impact of the ecological environment of Dongxiang county on the life of Dongxiang people.And then by expressing Yang-ba-shi’s thinking and questioning to the traditional way of living to explain,it is the poor and lack of resources are the internal motivation that forced them to leave the hometown in the1980 s.In the second place,I am with a view to the policies that implemented by Lanzhou government in early period of the reform and opening-up.And ascribe the external motivation that attract Yang-ba-shi into the city to those open-door policies.In the meantime,exploring the reason why Yang-ba-shi groups just decided to live in Xiaoxihu district instead of other areas of Lanzhou.Thirdly,I present Yang--ba-shi’s way to establish the industry from three procedures: seize the opportunity,overcome the first obstacles,and build a field domain.Last but not least,I consider their way to make the industry sense is the process to realize the goal of rural revitalization.To sum up,the dissertation expresses that the process of Dongxiang people getting rid of poverty and moving towards the revitalization is the process of the continuous renewal and perfection of their national culture.Then,the success of them reflects not only the presence of the state,but also the growing prosperity and strength of our country.Third,the success of Yang-ba-shi can not be separated from the practice of its group to transcend itself and also from the communicate with other ethnic groups.Therefore,knowing the formation path of their industry can help us to understand deeply the way that a ethnic group reproduces its culture,can learn from their experience of various ethnic groups in forging a strong sense of community of the Chinese nation.
