In recent years, under the influence of China’s severe aging trend, the demand for institutional care has become strong. The State Council has issued a number of documents to promote the high-quality development of various types of elderly care institutions, placing institutional care in the important position of service provision..According to previous studies,it is found that mental health problems of many elders living in nursing homes are prominent, mainly in loneliness, depression, anxiety and so on.Moreover, some organizations simply focus their work on meeting the material needs of the elderly, neglecting their mental health, which is seriously detrimental to the elderly’s happy life in their later years. The research purpose of this article mainly includes the following aspects: first,to analyze the mental health status of the elderly living in the X nursing home;second,to find the internal reasons behind their mental health status;third,to explore the potential needs of the elderly;fourth,Propose intervention mechanisms and make specific interventions from the perspective of social work. This article mainly cuts in from the perspective of social work for the elderly, and takes the fully self-care elderly living in an elderly care institution as the research object.Based on the previous literature, this paper selects Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, three dimensional interpersonal relations theory, and ecological systems theory as the research basis for this article. And make a summary of previous research results.Through field investigation and measurement at the X Nursing Home in Ezhou City, the author found that the elderly living in this institution had better mental health but also had problems, showing taciturn, emotional ups and downs, loneliness, insomnia, dreams, memory decline and other conditions. The author analyzes the cause of the problem from the perspective of the individual and the organization and explores the five major needs of the elderly’s concentrated feedback, and thus draws the conclusion that the elderly need professional help.Subsequently, the author systematically analyzed the intervention mechanism and set up a psychological adjustment group for the X Nursing Home in accordance with the social work theory and group working methods of the elderly, and carried out 5 rounds of group activities.Evaluate the achievement of the objectives and give a summary of the results after all activities have been completed.Through front-to-back testing and interview assessment,it was found that the group work had apositive effect on the mentality of the elderly to a certain extent, and their mental state and mental ability were changed. Finally, the author gives policy suggestions to promote the good mood of the elderly in institutions from the micro, meso and macro perspectives. The innovation of this article is to pay attention to and support the mental health of the elderly living in institutions from the perspective of social work in the elderly, and to make up for the shortcomings of previous related research. The shortcomings of this articlr are mainly as follows: First, due to the constraints of reality, the study has only an experimental group without a control group and the sample size is small,so the validity of the study is affected to a certain extent.Second, the author can only be exposed to the complete self-care elders, thus the study has limitations;third, the outline of interviews, the content of activities, and the author’s own common sense reserve have been greatly influenced by previous studies, and there is a lack of adaptability. In future research,we should expand the sample size and sample types as much as possible, and add control groups to make the research conclusions more extensive.
