| Compliance is an important ability for early childhood development and a sign of children’s socialization.Compliance is defined as a child’s ability to follow the instructions of others and to demonstrate appropriate and correct behavior without the need for monitoring.Children with developmental disabilities have social and communication difficulties, which make it difficult for them to maintain a high level of compliance in school, hindering their social development on the one hand and causing problems for teachers and peers on the other. Therefore, research in this field will gradually become an indispensable topic in the field of intervention for special children in the future. As a recent achievement in this field, chain reinforcement is important in the context of functional communication training for the study of compliance in children with developmental disabilities and has some potential for use in intervention studies to improve compliance.Empirical studies in this area have mainly focused on school-aged children with autism spectrum disorders, with a small number of studies focusing on children with other types of developmental disabilities such as intellectual disabilities, and fewer studies on children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In this study,a school-aged child with autism spectrum disorder and a school-aged child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were selected as the subjects, and a chain reinforcement strategy was used to develop an intervention program for each of the two cases in the context of functional communication training,in order to improve the compliance of the two children and provide a model for future interventions in this area. This study used a reversal design in a single subject experimental approach with follow-up.The independent variable in this study was chain reinforcement in the context of functional communication training, and the dependent variable was three target behaviors(compliance behavior, challenging behavior, and functional communication behavior). The entire intervention consisted of five phases:baseline phase I,intervention phase I,baseline phase II,intervention phase II,and maintenance phase. At the end of the intervention, the information related to the three target behaviors collected was quantitatively analyzed using visual analysis, and relevant qualitative information was collected in combination with interviews. The results of the study showed that Xiao Bo’s compliance behavior increased significantly, his out-of-seat behavior improved significantly, and his functional communication behavior also increased significantly, and the short-term maintenance effect after withdrawal of the intervention strategy was good. The significant increase in compliance and functional communication behaviors and the significant improvement in yelling behaviors in Xiao Xin further indicated that the chain reinforcement was effective in intervening with the target behaviors of the cases, and the parents and teachers of both cases generally approved of the intervention effects of this study. This study concluded that:functional behavior assessment is an effective, accurate and rapid method to obtain challenging behavioral functions;chain reinforcement strategies can effectively promote the development of compliance skills in children with developmental disabilities;the chain reinforcement strategy can obtain good social validity. |
