Objective: to investigate the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality of college students in Shanghai, and to explore the role of BMI in the relationship. Methods: this study used IPAQ-short and Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI)to survey 1,500 college students in Shanghai.Results:(1)There was a gender difference in physical activity level(t =-2.066,p < 0.05)and BMI(t = 3.183,p < 0.05).The mean score of physical activity level of men was higher than that of women, and the mean score of BMI of women was higher than that of men. There were no gender differences in sleep quality scores.(2)Physical activity level was significantly negatively correlated with sleep quality score(r=-0.466,p<0.01)and BMI(r=-0.559,p< 0.01).BMI was positively correlated with sleep quality score(r=0.660,p< 0.01).(3)BMI had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality, with the mediating effect value of 0.347 and the total effect value of 0.477,accounting for 72% of the total effect value.Conclusion:(1)Gender differences in physical activity and BMI;There was no gender difference in sleep quality.(2)Physical activity level has a negative predictive effect on sleep quality score, that is,physical activity is positively correlated with sleep quality;Physical activity level has a negative predictive effect on BMI,that is,physical activity is negatively correlated with BMI.BMI has a positive predictive effect on sleep quality score, that is,BMI is negatively correlated with sleep quality.(3)BMI plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality, that is,physical activity can directly affect sleep quality or indirectly affect sleep quality through BMI.
