| This paper takes Cantonese dialectal words of English Words Collected Complete as the research object.English words collected,compiled by Tang Tingshu who lived in the late Qing Dynasty and published firstly in 1862 by Guangzhou Weijing Hall,was considered as the earliest bilingual dictionary as well as textbook which was written by Chinese entirely.In addition,English words collected was perceived as the longest and the richest Cantonese-English reading material in 1860s.English words collected put the same kind of words phrase and short sentence in the same group and finally dived them into 53 categories,Cantonese was used as phonetic symbols and explanatory note.This book contains a great quantity of vivid Yue dialects,reflects the usage of Yue dialects in Lingnan region.It is of significant value to the study of Cantonese vocabulary in the late Qing Dynasty.In academic community,researches on the book of English words collected mainly focuses on three aspects:as a business English reading material as well as text book of late Qing Dynasty,Tang Tingshu's contribution to English education,and the development history of English education in Guangdong province.There is a lack of research on the book as a dialect.What is the overall appearance of the Cantonese dialect words included in the book of English Words Collected Complete?Where do these dialect words come from,what are their implications,and what kind of folk-custom culture they carry?These problems need to be further explored.Therefore,this paper mainly discusses the general appearance,source,and meaning of the Cantonese dialect words in this book.English Words Collected Complete is rich in content,and was divided into six volumes,fifty-three categories.The author makes statistics on the selection and arrangement of Cantonese dialect words,the number of Cantonese dialect words in each volume,the content of words and the distribution in each volume,finally sorts out 220 dialect words that are still active in Cantonese or have disappeared,discusses the reasons for their disappearance briefly.Cantonese dialect words of English Words Collected Complete can be divided into four categories according to their origins:from ancient Chinese,loanwords from other nationalities and countries,come from slang source and characteristic words of Guangdong dialect.From the diachronic perspective,this paper concludes the characteristics of Cantonese dialect words included in English Words Collected Complete:the historical and cultural characteristics of the ancient times,and the rich regional and cultural characteristics of Lingnan area.Furthermore,this paper discusses the Lingnan folk culture matters carried by these Cantonese dialect words and the unique cultural psychology of Guangfu people,such as "water" is the representative of money,pursuing good fortune and avoiding bad luck while talking to others,using homophony to pray for blessings and avoid disaster,etc. |
