An old Chinese saying goes,“ It takes ten years to grow trees but a hundred years to foster people.” The development of a nation needs talents,so does the talents to education.Communicating Commitment to Liberal Education—A Self-Study Guide for Institutions,and Trends and Emerging Practices in General Education were issued by AAC&U(Association of American Colleges & Universities)respectively in the year of 2006 and 2009.The two educational reports clarify the contents about general education of undergraduates in the colleges and universities of United States,which identifies the features of academic texts: cohesion in expression and strong logic.In this translation practice,translator guided by Newmark's communicative translation strategy,selected three types of cases using different translation methods to analyze.The three cases including conversion of dashes,translation of long sentences,and discourse cohesion.In dash conversion,the dashes in original text were replaced by other punctuation,such as comma,colon,and parentheses or Chinese characters or omission the dash in the translation.When translating long sentences,several methods were used such as restructuring,reversing and amplification,transforming parts of speech.In discourses,the translator analyzes the cohesion and coherence of the discourses from different aspects according to the features of the original texts,to make the translation more smooth and accurate.
