Picture Daily was created in1909.It was the earliest lithograph pictorial in the shape of daily journals.The pictorial vividly recorded the urban commercial and folk customs of Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty with pictures and texts.Picture Daily is of great significance to the study of urban commercial folk in this period.The academic research on the Picture Daily mainly focuses on social history,social culture,women,drama,communication,and text.But there is very little research on urban commercial folk.From the perspective of folk,this paper takes the pictures and texts of Shanghai's urban commercial folk presented by Picture Daily as a case study.Based on the analysis of relevant reports,this thesis systematically discusses the commercial customs of Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty in Picture Daily.This paper is composed of three parts: introduction,body and conclusion.The body part is discussed from five chapters.Chapter 1 “Shanghai urban commercial folk background and Picture Daily in the late Qing Dynasty”.Explore the reasons for the development of urban commercial folk in Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty and the relevant situation of Picture Daily.To determine the research background and research scope.Chapter 2 “Shanghai urban commercial folk activities in the late Qing Dynasty”.This paper selects three kinds of perspective to investigate the business,residential business,middlemen.It reveals the characteristics of mobile sales,fixed-point sales,and the role of media in urban commercial activities.Chapter 3 “the folk custom of commercial advertising in Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty”.The advertising methods can fully reflect commercial folklore activities.This paper analyzes the advertising methods such as Shouting,rattle,paper,leaflet and flyer is related to pictorial paper.Then explore the cultural psychology and life traits of commercial advertising folk customs related to the late Qing Dynasty.Chapter 4 “Shanghai metropolis commercial beliefs and taboos in the late Qing Dynasty”.Belief and taboos can influence the formation of commercial folk.This paper discusses the spiritual significance of mystical color to commercial folk from the perspectives of belief activities and taboo activities.Chapter 5 “characteristics of urban commercial folk customs in Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty”.Focus on changes in urban commerce and folk,around four aspects: new experience,merchant status,citizens' daily consumption life,and advertising.This paper expounds the color and vitality of Shanghai's urban commercial customs in the late Qing Dynasty.Concluding part,through the research of Picture Daily,On the one hand,it can excavate folk memory from pictorial study,and on the other hand,I can feel the awakening of public consciousness from the pictorial.Experience the folk value and practical significance brought by Picture Daily.
