Many studies in recent years have found that background sounds can interfere with people's cognitive activities.Studies have shown that speech background sounds seriously interfere with people's reading comprehension process, but it has not been agreed whether pure music background sounds will interfere with reading comprehension. Many studies have consistently sho wn that task-independent speech background sounds have severely disrupted the memory performance of ongoing visual cognitive activities,a phenomenon known as irrelevant speech effects.Existing research results generally support that irrelevant speech can significantly interfere with text reading, however, there is currently a lack of research on the specific impact stages of irrelevant speech on complex cognitive tasks such as reading. This study uses advanced eye tracking technology to explore in depth the effects of unrelated speech and pure musical background sounds on the syntactic and vocabulary processing stages in Chinese sentence reading. The first experiment examined the influence of pure music on Chinese sentence reading, and whether irrelevant speech would interfere with the middle stage of sentence processing. The experiment used 3(background sound type: dialogue, pure music,no background sound)× 2(syntax type: simpler, more complicated). The experimental results obtained significant backgr ound sound effects and syntactic effects.(1)Compared with the condition of pure music and no background sound, the reading time of the reader under the condition of dialogue increases significantly. The reading efficiency of readers under more complex syntactic conditions is significantly reduced compared to simple conditions.Explain that background sounds and syntax have an impact on the later stages of sentence reading.(2)There is a significant interaction between the background sound type and the syntax type. The more complex syntax under the dialogue condition significantly increases the reading load of the participants, while pure music can reduce the cognitive load of reading. It shows that the degree of interference of background sounds on reading will vary according to the type of syntax, that is,it will be affected by the difficulty of reading materials.(3)Under the conditions of dialogue background sounds and more complex syntaxes, the processing time of target words increases, that is,background sounds and syntaxes have an impact on the middle and even early stages of sentence reading. The results support the separate-sentence-interpretation-resource(SSIR)model.Experiment 2 continued to investigate whether the role of background sounds o ccurred in the early stages of sentences during Chinese sentence reading. The experiment was designed using 3 factors(background sound type: dialogue, pure music,no background sound)× 2(target word frequency: high frequency, low frequency). It was found that(1)Readers have longer reading time and more fixation count in the background of the conversation;while the reading speed was significantly accelerated under the background sound of pure music.(2)The total gaze time of low-frequency words is significantly reduced under pure music, indicating that pure music can promote the vocabulary processing of low-frequency words.(3)The word frequency effect on the first fixation duration and the regression in count disappeared under the condition of dialogue, but appeared under the condition of pure music and no background sound, indicating that the background sound of dialogue significantly interfered with the early stage of sentence reading. The experimental results do not match the content interference hypothesis.
