The communication between graduate students and tutors is of great significance to the growth of graduate students and it is also one of the core factors affecting the quality of graduate education.However,there have been controversies surrounding the use of power by tutors in the process of communicating with graduate students.While extreme conflicts with tutors occurring,the call for controlling tutors' power was always high.The tutors' power seemed to be a “scourge”,but in fact tutors themselves were trapped in the process of guiding graduate students,even the righteousness to graduate students.Evaluation needs to be "thought-out",and power seems to be in a state of nothingness.Under the imbalance of power,the educational power is in a difficult position.Therefore,constructing a power balance mechanism in the communication between tutors and graduate students to ensure the balance of the power between them is of great significance to the improvement of the quality of graduate education.This research uses the perspective of social exchange theory to analyze the generation process of the power relationship between tutors and graduate students.The theory believes that people communicate with each other because of the mutual dependence,and the power relationship is generated in the communication with each other.Based on this theory,this research has formed a framework to analysis the generation process of the power relationship.On the basis of this analysis framework,the in-depth interview method,text analysis method and case analysis method are used to analyze the causes of power imbalance in the communication between graduate students and tutors.The high demand for academic qualifications,the social and state-planned management system makes it difficult for graduate students to withdraw,and the lack of a clear right relief system has caused graduate students to rely on tutors and expanded the power of tutors.Conversely,public opinion in society Pressure and the academic management system also leave room for graduate students to exercise their conversion power,which affects the power of tutors.The main reason for the imbalance of power is the lack of the right to freely choose for each other so that they have no enough space to coordinate.Therefore,this study believes that it is important to build an environment where tutors and graduate students can freely choose to conclude and withdraw from the mentoring relationship.The realization of this mechanism needs to ensure that the two parties have relatively balanced mutual selection opportunities;clarification of the responsibilities and powers of the supervisor,and the law that defines the boundary between them.Lastly we should have a procedure for remedying the rights of tutors and graduate students.
