At present,the reform of quality education in our country is constantly advancing.The core geography qualities such as the concept of man-land coordination,comprehensive thinking,regional cognition,and geographic practice in the new geography curriculum fully reflect the thought of quality education.Local geography teaching has obvious advantages in cultivating the core geography qualities.Food is the material basis for human existence,food culture is a true portrayal of the relationship between man and land.Its geographical features are an excellent entry point for local geography teaching.Based on the basic data obtained from field investigations,this paper uses literature method,survey method and teaching practice method to study the geographical characteristics of food culture in the southwest China and the application of food culture in local geography teaching.The results of the study show that:First,the southwestern China has complex topography,diverse climate,rich water systems,abundant products,underdeveloped economy,many ethnic minorities,and significant differences in the natural and human geographical characteristics of various regions.Therefore,the food culture in the Southwest China has obvious regionality,diversity and richness.Second,The natural environment in the Southwest China determine the types of crops and food cooking methods.The special natural environment also protects the local food culture.History and culture in the Southwest China have laid the foundation of food culture,ethnic customs have formed the characteristics of food culture,economic levels have restricted the development of food culture.Third,most teachers believe that food culture is consistent with local geography,because of high pressure to enter higher education and limited classroom teaching methods,they pay less attention to food culture,the teaching method is traditional and single.Fourth,aiming at the problems in the local geography teaching of food culture,the following methods are proposed:(1)Carry out special activities,including focusing on man-land relationship,extensive collection of teaching materials,and flexible use of comparative methods.(2)Carry out thematic activities,including steps such as preparation before the activity,implementation during the activity and evaluation after the activity.(3)Use case teaching,including selecting appropriate cases and linking them to real life.This research can broaden the research direction of traditional food culture,enrich the theory of food culture in the southwest China.It can also provide a basis for the application of food culture in local geography teaching and provide some inspiration and help for the cause of geography education.
