It has been of significance as well as difficulty to teach ancient poetry and prose in middle school.Students in this phase are inclined to be held back in initial interpretation of the texts by the special features of the language.Therefore,teachings in this field seem to remain the level of word explanations and paragraph translations where the teaching seems hollow and learning dull.It is apparent that such learning through translation,regardless of the writing purposes,author’s experience,social contexts or historical background,would fail to reach the three-dimensional objectives.In this sense,it is crucial to take on the historical dimension so that students could develop knowledge of renowned authors’ styles and digest the famous prose and poems whereupon the educational outcome would go beyond the paragraphs.Students could obtain actual learning approaches and engage actively in the class of ancient poetry and prose.On the basis of the author’s teaching practice in Chinese,the first chapter mainly discusses the value of historical dimension for ancient prose and poetry teaching for middle school students.In the second chapter,historical dimensions involved in the ancient poetry and prose from Chinese textbooks(Grade Seven to Nine)for compulsory education edited by Ministry of Education in 2016.In the third chapter,the current teaching situation of ancient prose and poetry is discussed through the analysis of the questionnaires finished by students at Hubei Shuiguohu No.1 Middle school and thereby causes for the predicament.Built on that,in the fourth chapter,teaching strategies for middle school ancient poetry and prose teaching from the perspective of historical dimension:the integration of Chinese and history—where the "comprehensiveness" of Chinese is manifested,understanding a person through the times—an effective use of social-historical criticism,learning from the ancient scholars—obtaining writing skills from the ancient prose and poetry,and learning from the history—obtaining "positive energy" in the ancient prose and poetry.As for varied prose,poems,authors and teaching requirements,the author provides specific teaching clips,class activities and after-class explorations.In this sense,the master dissertation embodies practical value for Chinese middle school teachers for ancient prose and poetry teaching.
