In the 21 st century, great powers are competing with each other not only in the economic sphere, but also in education. On the basis of paying more and more attention to their own educational undertakings and trying to reform the curriculum, each country also pays more attention to international educational exchanges. As the main resource of teaching, textbooks are the framework of teachers' "teaching" and the basis of students' learning. Therefore, textbooks can influence the success or failure of educational reform to a great extent. As the supplement and extension of the basic knowledge of mathematics, this part of the content can not only effectively broaden the vision of students, cultivate students' interest in mathematics, improve students' ability of hands-on operation, and develop students' core quality in an all-round way.Students can also understand the close relationship between mathematics and other subjects and realize the importance of mathematics.Nowadays, the development of junior middle school extensional courses has been paid attention to in many first-tier cities.Schools and teachers hope that students can master mathematics knowledge through extensional courses, and be able to independently and accurately use mathematics knowledge. As the representatives of the eastern and western countries,China and the United States have great differences in politics, economy, humanities and education, and they also have different ideas and perspectives in the process of compiling textbooks.Based on this, this paper selected the Compulsory Education Mathematics Textbook(Graders 7-9)published by People's Education Press and the Middle School Mathematics Textbook(Graders 6-7)published by MC-Graw Hill Press of California,USA,as the research object, using literature review method, statistical analysis method and other methods. This paper makes a comparative study of the two editions of textbooks from the macro and micro levels. The comparison shows that there are some differences between the PEP edition textbooks and the California edition textbooks, and we can learn from each other.Common points :(1)Both editions of the textbooks are mainly in the form of illustrations;(2)Both textbooks attach great importance to the connection between the expanding columns and life;(3)Both editions pay attention to the application of mathematics;(4)Both editions pay attention to the application of information technology in their compilation;(5)The topics involved in the expansion column of the two editions of the textbook are very rich;(6)The two editions of textbooks have strong operability in the expansion column.Differences :(1)The expanded column of PEP textbooks is more readable;(2)From the comparison of the subjects involved,it can be seen that Chinese textbooks pay more attention to the integration of mathematical history, while California textbooks pay more attention to the integration of scientific knowledge;(3)PEP textbooks pay more attention to the specific application of knowledge, while California textbooks pay more attention to how to use knowledge;(4)The expansion column of California version is more interesting;(5)The use of information technology in California textbooks is more convenient than that in PEP textbooks. On the basis of these research findings, the following suggestions are put forward for the compilation of the extension column of junior middle school mathematics textbooks :(1)the curriculum standards are included in the mathematics textbooks to match the standards with the content;(2)strengthen the connection between mathematics and other subjects;(3)Appropriately increase the content of marginal notes. The following suggestions are put forward for teachers and schools :(1)Teachers should improve their comprehensive quality;(2)The school should provide necessary teaching conditions for the development of extended columns.
