In late 2017,China's Ministry of Education issued the new General High School Geography Curriculum Standard(2017 Edition),and People's Education Press,Shandong Education Press,Hunan Education Publishing House, and China Cartographic Publishing House revised and published the new textbooks(four editions)with respective unique structures according to the new curriculum standard in 2019.This paper takes Geography 1,a new high school textbook as an example.By comparing the structural characteristics of four different editions,it helps teachers to comprehend the textbook in a better way as well as to feel the features of the compiling.Firstly, this paper compares the chapter structures of these four editions.Judging from the general structure, they all emphasize the natural elements chapter according to the requirements of the New Curriculum Standard. As for the “content standards”,the arrangements vary.In the Earth chapter,PEP edition(People's Education Press)and SEP edition(Shandong Education Press)place the evolution of the Earth before the layers of the Earth on the basis of internal logic;in the Natural Elements chapter,PEP edition and HEP edition(Hunan Education Press)emphasize the mutual relationship between vegetation and soil elements, while SEP edition highlights the understanding of natural elements from the perspective of the interaction between surface layers, and CCPH edition(China Cartographic Publishing House)pays more attention to the natural elements as a whole;in the Natural Disaster and Geographic Information Technology chapters,PEP,SEP and CCPH editions arrange them separately, while HEP edition skillfully blends these two parts with the Natural Elements chapter.Secondly, this paper compares the section settings of these four editions. In the Introduction section,PEP edition lists a chain of major questions in the chapter;SEP edition illustrates with beautiful lyrical languages;HEP edition takes both science and its popularization into account;CCPH edition brings exploration tasks to front. In the Lead-in section from the situational approach,PEP edition focuses on case analysis, reading and thinking;SEP edition stresses the discovery of questions from geographic images;HEP edition introduces rich and detailed materials while the content of CCPH edition is quite novel. In the Knowledge Extension section,PEP and CCPH editions emphasize the function of expanding knowledge and case studies;SEP edition highlights the analysis of geographic principles;and HEP edition balances the section functions the best.In the Exploration section, these four editions all pay more attention to cognitive activities rather than practical ones. Finally, based on the results of this study, the author puts forward three constructive strategies for teachers to use textbooks effectively, which are studying the geography curriculum standard carefully to understand the structure of the textbook;making full use of the columns of the textbook to develop the functional features of columns;organizing large unit teaching tasks through reasonable allocation of teaching content.
