In 1949,Xinhua Bookstore Publishing House and Shanghai United Publishing House jointly published the history textbook High School National History which was revised by Ministry of Education of the North China People's Government.This book was actually edited by the Chinese History Research Association.As one of the important excerpts of the Compendium of General History of China,the history textbook High School National History was temporarily used during the transition from the old period to the new period of China.The history textbook reflected the effect of old-new period transition on the transformation of high school history education.Investigations on this book help broaden the research on the history curriculum and teaching in modern Chinese middle school,help reveal the development process of the history curriculum in the new China middle school,and help deepen the understanding of the transformation of history textbooks.The style and content of "High School National History" was relatively mature.The back and front cover reasonably present the textbook content,publisher,publication time and other information.This textbook adopted the traditional vertical printing and thus possesses some unique advantages such as novel design,solemnity.According to the compilation style of programming,the textbook divided ancient Chinese history into primitive communist society,slave society and feudal society.And the textbook systematically discussed the Chinese history in the period from the primitive society to the Opium War.The history textbook "High School National History" selected the general public and heroes in ancient China with patriotic sentiment and nationalist spirit as educational materials to promote the spirit of patriotism.And the contradiction between the ruling class and the peasants was viewed as the main line in this history textbook under the guidance of historical materialism.Furthermore,this book focused on economic life and people's livelihood issues,and clarified the great role of the people in promoting historical development.This book had the characteristics of novel viewpoints and unique content with studying on the political correctness and military struggle.However,the limitations of history textbook could inevitably damage the independence of historiography to a certain degree,such as the lack of necessary analysis and the use of ethnic slurs.During the development process of history textbook in the modern Chinese high school,High School National History was the first high school history textbook with the contents of historical materialism.The textbook was not only the last set of high school home history textbooks published during the Republic of China,but also the first set of high school home history textbooks used in new China.This book promoted the progress of related research work in China's history.In addition,its fixed style and material selection model lay the basic framework for the compilation of middle school history textbooks in the future,and this history textbook can cultivate student's core competence.
