The fundamental task of our higher education institutions is to nurture people for the Party and talents for the country, and they are responsible for the historical mission of cultivating and creating well-rounded socialist builders and successors. As a special group of teachers in colleges and universities, counselors play an irreplaceable role in the growth and success of students as their life tutors and friends for their healthy growth. Therefore, professional identity is both the foundation and the prerequisite for promoting the role of college counselors in nurturing people and improving the effectiveness of counselors' work.In this study,301 college counselors from different levels and regions in Xinjiang were surveyed by questionnaires and interviews on their professional roles, professional status, professional values, professional emotions and professional abilities,in order to find out the current situation of professional identity and the problems of counselors in Xinjiang.Ten counselors were interviewed to futher explore the existing problems and to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the causes of the problems. The study concludes that the professional identity of counselors in Xinjiang's universities is of medium to high level. The level of professional role, value and ability identity is relatively high, while the level of professional status and professional emotional identity is still insufficient. The reasons for this are that the high level of professional role, value and competence in the professional identity of college counselors in Xinjiang is mainly related to the support of clear policy documents on the value, role and competence of college counselors at the national level,as well as the active mastering of the standards and practical experience of counselors before and after they join the profession;while the low level of professional emotion and status is related to the fact that college counselors are not professionalized enough, and their professional duties are not yet professionalized enough. The lack of professionalism, generalization of professional duties, high labour intensity, difficulty in career advancement, insufficient training and complicated motivations for joining the profession are related to the lack of professionalism of university counselors. This study suggests that the government should improve the relevant policies and systems to promote the professional development of counselors.Specifically,it is necessary to establish a professional qualification certificate system for college counselors and to establish more counsellor majors or set up corresponding elective courses;at the college level,it is necessary to optimize the management system and enhance the attractiveness of the counsellor profession:firstly,it is necessary to clarify the admission system and guarantee professional identity.Secondly, professional duties should be refined and the boundaries of work should be clarified.Thirdly, vocational training should be strengthened to ensure professional competence.Lastly,an incentive mechanism should be established to strengthen spiritual motivation;at the individual level, individual counselors should scientifically perceive themselves and stimulate internal motivation.Specifically, they should establish correct career motivation and enhance the awareness of professional development, and at the same time, they should secure and enhance the professional identity of counselors in Xinjiang's universities through measures and ways such as communicating with their families and obtaining their understanding and support.
