PBL(Project-Based Learning)is a model of teaching that is designed to produce realistic project based a driving question and is now widely used in the design of teaching in international curriculums.During my internship at YCIS Shanghai Pudong Campus,I found that the school started to implement mixed classes in the autumn term of 2021 in order to address the significant gap in Chinese language ability between students of the same level during the epidemic and the problem of some students returning to school without repeating a grade.This model is designed to integrate students of the different Chinese level into the same class with the same teacher using different teaching materials,without affecting their progression to next level.While the mixed class teaching model promotes complementary improvement among students of different Chinese levels,it also presents practical problems such as uneven allocation of class time and difficulties in integrating different teaching materials.Through front-end analysis,I found that the school had already used the PBL teaching mode in other courses with good results and students were more comfortable with it,so I decided to use the PBL teaching mode for the instructional design of the mixed class Chinese lessons.The key questions to be addressed in the design of this paper are as follows: What kind of project are suitable for a mixed class Chinese lesson? How can we understand students' learning from their project and how effective is the PBL teaching model in a mixed class Chinese lesson?In order to explore the above questions,this paper uses case study,questionnaire and interviewing methods to conduct research and draws the following conclusions:Firstly,deciding project that are related to the topics of the textbook,students' real life and other subject learning topics is not only authentic,but also helps to stimulate students' interest in learning and using Chinese.Secondly,through case studies of the content and form of the students' output,teachers can understand students' mastery of the content they have learnt and their skills in using Chinese.Thirdly,mixed class Chinese lessons using the PBL teaching model are more effective.The project not only help students to practise the Chinese learning content and stimulate their interest in learning,but also enhance students' autonomy in learning Chinese under the condition that the learning objectives come first.
