Chemistry science is at the heart of global progress and is critical to addressing upcoming global challenges such as sustainable development. The cultivation of systems thinking is learner-centered,requiring learners to use model construction and systematic reasoning, adhere to the viewpoint of sustainable development, and apply chemical knowledge to solve social phenomena and scientific problems centered on real situations.Due to the diverse types and properties of chemical substances, how to build a assignment model that can promote the development of high school students' systems thinking has become a problem that needs to be considered. For these reasons, this study focuses on the following three questions.(1)What is the current level of systems thinking among high school students?(2)How to build the chemical assignment model to improve the systems thinking of high school students? Based on this model, how to design chemical assignments related to the elemental compounds and cycling of sulfur and nitrogen?(3)Does the implementation of chemical assignments based on systems thinking have effect on the systems thinking of high school students? With the use of different research methods like literature research and interview investigation,we know the current situation of system thinking of senior high school students. The lack of effective assignments design during teaching process of elemental compounds leads to weak knowledge of cycling of sulfur and nitrogen. This research designs the chemical assignments based on systems thinking and applies it to system teaching practice. This study found that the systematic teaching model based on assignments design is more suitable for the learning of elemental compounds, and the systematic teaching model integrated with the chemical assignments based on systematic thinking improves the level of systematic thinking. These findings suggest that chemistry educators should cultivate based on systems thinking in teaching, grasp the nature and characteristics of chemistry, integrate chemistry education with systems thinking, and improve teaching models and assignment design.
