Scientific reasoning plays an important role in the core literacy of physics.The ability of scientific reasoning will affect students' academic performance and their opinion to our daily life and even their decisions to some social problems.A great many studies show that the students' ability of scientific reasoning decrease after the new college entrance examination reform.Tradition tools or tests can easily evaluate general scientific reasoning abilities of samples,but it is difficult to test the scientific reasoning abilities with physical features.As a result,it is hard for physics teachers to get useful information from the results.In this paper,we choose 535 students from a normal university as samples.We try to measure their ability of scientific reasoning by using Mechanics Reasoning Inventory(MRI),which has been used for measuring scientific reasoning ability for nearly a decade.At the same time,some interviews involved 7 teachers and 4 students were conducted.We try to measure students' scientific reasoning ability objectively.Hence,we can propose some suggestions for revising the items of MRI and teaching strategies for teachers and school.There are seven conclusions:First,the overall reliability,difficulty and discrimination are good according to CTT.Second,the scientific reasoning ability of the sample is medium,and the skewness of the distribution is negative.In terms of sub-dimensions,the score of conservation reasoning is the lowest and the score of proportional reasoning is the highest.Third,the scientific ability of students who take “national paper” is significantly better than students from Shanghai.The distribution of scores for Shanghai students is polarization.Fourth,in terms of students from Shanghai and Zhejiang province,the more scientific subjects they choose,the higher scores they achieve.Students who choose physics and biology perform best among the samples above.Fifth,when it comes to students who take “national paper”,whether students learn one elective coursebook or two,whether they learn books about thermal mechanics or books about optics and vibration,there is no significant difference.Sixth,in terms of students from traditional area,where they take “national paper”mode,students from different province will take different exams with different difficulty.The scientific reasoning of students who take “national paper I” is the best and have significant difference with other students.Last,speaking of students from different grades,the scientific reasoning ability of freshmen is the best,and have significantly difference than other students.
