Traditional academies are an important type of cultural and educational space in ancient China,and the traditional academies in Guangzhou are of great significance to the history of culture and education in Lingnan and the development of the city,yet a large number of them are dying out.In the past forty years,Guangzhou has continued to promote the conservation of Historical and Cultural city,but the existing academies are facing the real dilemma of decay and desolation,and there is an urgent need to propose methods and paths for their conservation and use.Based on the above background,this study focuses on the survival and development of traditional academies in Guangzhou,taking the existing traditional academies within the Guangzhou city as the research object and spatial conservation and utilisation as the starting point,aiming to establish a basic information database of traditional academies in Guangzhou through research and interviews and parametric analysis,clarify their comprehensive value,geographical distribution and spatial characteristics,and then build a conservation and utilisation model based on comprehensive value assessment.The aim is to establish a database of basic information on the traditional academies in Guangzhou,identify their comprehensive value,geographical distribution and spatial characteristics,and then build a classification system of conservation and utilisation modes based on comprehensive value assessment,and finally make macro planning guidance and propose specific strategies for the four types of modes: repairing the old as the old,continuing the function,replacing the function and changing the location.This study consists of three main parts.The first part is a study of the theoretical background and the basics of traditional academies in Guangzhou(Chapters 1 and 2).Based on the combing and analysis of relevant research results on traditional Chinese academies,Lingnan traditional academies and the conservation and utilisation of historical buildings,the basic characteristics of traditional academies in Guangzhou are summarised in terms of development background,spatial characteristics and comprehensive values.This part of the study can be used as a theoretical basis for the spatial conservation and utilisation of the latter.The second part is an analysis of the process and current situation of the spatial conservation and utilisation of Guangzhou’s traditional academies(Chapter 3).Combining information on the policy system for the conservation of Guangzhou’s historic cities and the practice of the conservation and utilisation of historic buildings,it compares the history of the conservation and utilisation of the space of Guangzhou’s traditional academies.Through literature collection,research interviews and other methods,a database of basic information is established and an atlas is generated with the help of Arcgis parameter tools to analyse the overall retention,geographical distribution characteristics and typical spatial characteristics of traditional academies.The literature and research data are summarised to sort out the current problems of spatial conservation and utilisation.The third part is the classification of modes of spatial conservation and utilisation of traditional academies in Guangzhou and the proposed strategies(Chapters 4 and 5).Based on a comparative analysis of the existing modes of conservation and utilisation,the spatial characteristics of the traditional academies in Guangzhou are combined to clarify the classification system of the spatial conservation and utilisation modes of the traditional academies in Guangzhou based on a comprehensive value assessment,and four modes of conservation and utilisation are proposed,namely,repairing the old as the old,continuing the function,replacing the function and changing the location.Finally,the macro planning guidance and spatial conservation and utilisation strategies for the four modes are proposed,taking into account the geographical distribution and typical spatial characteristics.There are three major innovations in this study.First,it establishes for the first time a database of basic information on the existing traditional academies in Guangzhou,which provides a data base for future research.Secondly,a classification system of spatial conservation and utilisation patterns for traditional academies in Guangzhou is constructed,which provides a basis for the subsequent proposal of targeted strategies.Thirdly,it proposes a macro planning guidance and micro classification strategy for the spatial conservation and utilisation of Guangzhou traditional academies,which provides a reference for the design planning and practice of traditional academy conservation and utilisation.
