Following the successful bid for the Grand Canal, the national and local governments have enacted various policies to protect and utilise the Grand Canal and its cultural heritage. At the same time, the conservation and use of the canal towns is in full swing, but with little success.Ultimately, the complex and unique landscape formation of canal towns makes it difficult to summarise their categorical characteristics.Local governments and relevant departments have not explored the landscape features of the canal towns in depth, resulting in the secondary destruction of the towns. In the context of the post-renewal era and the real-life problems faced by the ancient canal towns, how to explore the unique regional landscape characteristics of the ancient canal towns from the perspective of landscape gardening, which distinguish them from urban and rural areas or other towns, and develop them in a healthy way is the core of this research. The landscape gene theory takes the landscape gene as the basic unit for the development and inheritance of the settlement, and explores the regional landscape characteristics of the settlement. This thesis applies landscape gene theory to the study of the ancient town of Canal,in order to maximise the uniqueness of the town’s regional landscape. The ancient canal town of Qiji is located in a major canal traffic hub and has flourished through the momentum of canal transport, becoming a famous trade town along the canal, with the name of ’Golden Qiji’.This thesis identifies and extracts the landscape genes of Qiji Canal Town based on the theory of landscape genes, establishes a landscape gene identification index system, and finds the determinants that shape the landscape of the settlement. In turn,a landscape gene information chain is constructed to enhance and highlight the regional culture and explore the regional landscape characteristics of the ancient town, with a view to providing a theoretical basis for the later conservation and development of the ancient town. The research in this thesis consists of three main parts: the first part, through field surveys and literature analysis, examines the general situation of the ancient town of Qiji Canal, landscape elements and conservation and utilisation, and provides basic information for the subsequent identification of landscape genes and construction of information chains. In the second part,a total of 13 identification indicators are identified and extracted from four categories of identification factors: layout features, characteristic spaces, local dwellings and cultural customs,to establish a landscape gene identification indicator system for Qiji Canal Old Town, which will help to systematically explore a more reasonable and perfect conservation and development model for Qiji Canal Old Town. The third part, based on the theory of landscape gene information chain, constructs the landscape gene information chain of Qiji Canal Ancient Town, and summarises the unique regional landscape characteristics of Qiji Canal Ancient Town in the form of meta-points-corridors-network research. It is clear that under the concept of "unity of heaven and man",Qiji Canal Ancient Town has taken the canal as its axis, with buildings, streets and alleys developing in accordance with the trend of the canal and in harmony with the topography and natural environment, forming a harmonious, unified and distinctive spatial feature, and presenting the regional cultural characteristics of prosperity and cultural diversity due to the canal. This thesis applies the theory of landscape genetics to the study of the landscape characteristics of the ancient town of Qiji Canal,to explore the unique regional landscape characteristics of the ancient town, and to avoid the problems of planning and construction caused by the late excavation of the landscape characteristics of the ancient town, resulting in the destruction of the original landscape appearance again. At the same time,it will provide reference and new ideas for the subsequent conservation and utilisation planning of Qiji Canal ancient town or similar ancient towns.
