Strategies For The Use Of Structure In Architectural Design From A Critical Perspective

This paper takes the example of Liu Jiakun,a locally-grown practicing architect,and focuses on the development of practice in the construction of architectural space,form and structure,without being bound by modern architectural theories and personal styles.After visiting and learning about different types of architectural projects,the author finds a lot of preliminary materials and considers the development and changes of the project architecture and structure through drawing redrawing and model building from the unique intervention generating logic,project background and design process of Jiakun Office and Liu Jiakun Architect’s work in the early stage.This paper attempts to analyse the architects’ basic position on structural technology and architectural art in architecture by combining the design strategies of both architectural and structural forms.Through the analysis of Jiakun’s office and Liu Jiakun’s design works,the author draws on the basic topics that have been a constant concern in his work: site paths,the here and now,and the topics of time and space that have been used as Liu Jiakun’s regionalist design approach in discussions and interviews about contemporary Chinese architecture.However,in the analysis of this paper,by combing through Chinese architects from the 1960 s onwards and comparing them with contemporaries such as Hua Li and Ma Qingyun,a misinterpretation of basic contemporary perceptions is avoided,and a deep connection between traditional contemporary interpretations in the keywords of time and space is also established,so that the presentation of contemporary Chinese architectural and structural forms in Liu Jiakun’s architectural works is viewed from a critical perspective.The thesis is divided into five main chapters.After establishing the background and critical perspective of the thesis in the first two chapters,it first establishes the common ground between space and time in the association of architectural and structural forms and Liu Jiakun’s architectural design strategies,and then selects projects of different building types for interpretation in chapters three and four.Further,the two perspectives of space inside and outside,and form light and heavy,respectively,are used as lead analysis to examine his design thinking,taking form as the entry point for expression and transformation of meaning under multiple dimensions of architecture and structure,respectively.Always focus on structural design strategies and architectural ontology presentation,architectural expression,the author believes that although architectural structural expression is only an idea of architectural design,but in the end,it is not a structural calculation from the structural system alone,so to fundamentally study how architects transform structural problems into architectural problems from the very beginning of the design vision,scene imagination,only then can we learn and grasp structural design more accurately.From beginning to end,of course,the sequence of the historical sequential development of structural expression,its mechanical characteristics,its structural form and its aesthetic value are essential as prerequisites for the discussion.In the conclusion and outlook of Chapter 5,the author proposes that the multiplicity of structural forms,which reflect the dual needs of architectural space and form,is the core of this discussion of architectural design strategies.By analysing the three structural systems commonly used by Liu Jiakun,namely the frame system,the wall structure system and the composite structure space,the analysis of visual perception,co-occurrence and ephemerality is developed to summarise the ways in which different design strategies can adjust site planning,architectural expression and structural presentation.Through the architectural design process of integrating structural design into architectural requirements and transforming engineering problems into architectural problems,a spatial design method of composite structures and architectural elements is obtained.The full text is approximately 80,000 words and 66 diagrams.
