Taoist temple architecture is an important material carrier for Taoist practitioners to practice, worship gods, and hold religious celebrations.Influenced by the Taoist concept of "tranquility and inaction," Taoist temples often pursue the realm of immortality and create a peaceful and elegant environment.Nowadays, with the rapid development of urbanization, the originally peaceful Taoist temples have been polluted by urban noise, resulting in poor audio-visual experience. These problems are particularly prominent in traditional Taoist temples in Guangzhou. At present, the academic research on Taoist temples mainly starts from the perspective of physical and architectural history, and there is relatively little research on the acoustic environment of Taoist temples.Soundscape is one of the hotspots in academic research in recent years. It studies the interrelationships between humans, hearing, acoustic environment, and society, taking into account people’s overall perception of sound, and effectively improving the research of acoustics. This article takes the soundscape of the Taoist Temple in Guangzhou as the research object, and uses methods such as literature research, field research, questionnaire survey,audio-visual interaction experiment, and statistical analysis to study the soundscape of the Taoist Temple from both qualitative and quantitative aspects. It comprehensively understands the perception and evaluation of sound and acoustic environment within the Taoist Temple,as well as the interactive impact of visual landscape and soundscape evaluation, and proposes targeted soundscape optimization design strategies. This article first summarizes the development history, distribution, types, and architectural layout of Guangzhou Taoist temples.Taoist temples can be divided into mountain forest type, urban type, and rural type.Taoist temples usually adopt the courtyard style layout of traditional architecture, with the main building on the central axis.Key Taoist temples such as the Sanyuan Temple,Chunyang Temple, and Huang Daxian Temple are selected as research objects. At the same time, analyze the current situation of the soundscape in the Taoist temple. The sound inside the temple is classified based on the sound source and soundscape characteristics, and the featured soundscape include the sound of instrumental,Taoist scriptures, and flowing water.Secondly,a questionnaire survey was used to understand the respondents’ evaluation of the sound environment in Daoist temples,as well as the impact of their social characteristics on the evaluation of the acoustic environment,as well as their preferences and perceptions of the sound inside Daoist temples.According to the analysis of questionnaire data, more than half of the respondents believe that the acoustic environment inside the Taoist temple is comfortable, quiet, and coordinated with the religious atmosphere inside the temple. The age, religious beliefs, and number of visits of the respondents are significantly correlated with their evaluations of the comfort, coordination, and quietness of Daoist temples.People like natural sounds the most, followed by artificial sounds related to Taoism. These two types of sounds are easier to perceive and recognize, and the more beloved the sound, the smaller the magnitude of the change in evaluation.Once again, using audiovisual interaction experiments, analyze the impact of visual stimuli on soundscape evaluation and the factors that affect acoustic comfort evaluation. The results indicate that the evaluation of soundscape is significantly influenced by visual stimuli, and the positive impact of audiovisual interaction offsets the negative impact of negative sound.Auditory stimuli have a greater impact on acoustic comfort and audiovisual coordination than visual stimuli. The degree of audio-visual coordination has a greater impact on acoustic comfort than the degree of visual beauty, and there is a significant correlation between the three evaluation indicators. Finally, based on the analysis of the questionnaire and the audio-visual interaction experiment,in response to the current acoustic environment problems of the Taoist temple, the paper proposes the optimization strategy of the Taoist temple soundscape: pay attention to the awareness of audio-visual interaction design, introduce the voice of positive evaluation, divide the audio-visual harmonious soundscape, and improve the viewing quality of the visual landscape,in order to improve the soundscape quality in the Taoist temple. This article conducts a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analysis of the soundscape of Guangzhou Taoist Temple from the perspective of soundscape studies, using methods such as field research, questionnaire surveys,audio-visual interaction experiments, and statistical analysis. This study not only enriches the research field of religious architecture and soundscape, but also has positive significance and role in protecting the traditional Taoist temple’s acoustic environment.
