With the rapid development of cities in China and the popularity of automobiles, pedestrian traffic is gradually replaced by automobiles, and environmental pollution as well as health problems are becoming increasingly serious. As the basic unit for residents to carry out production and life, the community is responsible for the important task of improving the construction of human living environment.Walking is the most basic mode of transportation for people, and it has a positive effect on reducing environmental pollution, improving environmental quality and residents’ health. The degree of optimization of community walking environment will have different impacts on residents’ travel behavior. Moreover,in the process of continuous urbanization, the continuous development of new urban communities also represents the gradual disappearance of old communities. However,in most cities in China, there are still a large number of old neighborhoods that exist and occupy an important position in the old urban areas. At present, the population structure of China’s old urban areas has shown a clear trend of aging, and the aging of various facilities is also more serious. In this context,it is necessary to design the pedestrian space in old communities, integrate it with urban space, and provide a reasonable and beneficial form of pedestrian space for the residents of old urban areas. How to better respond to the needs of the residents will be the focus of the future renovation design of old communities. This project intends to take the old communities in Nanchang City as an example and use GIS technology, field research and questionnaires to obtain basic data related to the pedestrian friendliness of old communities.Based on this, the Pearson correlation and IPA correction method are applied to analyze the priority demand factors, and on this basis, personalized pedestrian friendliness optimization strategies for old communities are proposed. The main findings of this article are as follows:(1)Guided by Maslow’s needs theory, this study explores the interplay between human needs and walking environment and constructs a pedestrian-friendly needs theory system suitable for old communities. In this system, five levels are divided into two dimensions, material and spiritual needs, providing a theoretical basis for selecting influencing factors and revealing their characteristics, etc. This project intends to build on this foundation, draw on the existing research achievements at home and abroad, and screen out 10 guideline layers from the five target layers through the Delphi method, with a total of 30 demand indicators.(2)By investigating the social attribute characteristics and the current situation of pedestrian-friendly needs of residents in old communities in Nanchang, and analyzing the measurement results of residents’ material needs and spiritual needs factors.Through Pearson correlation and IPA modified analysis for cascading,it was found that the influence of different residents of old and old communities on the priority demand of walkability differed significantly in different degrees and effects.More comprehensively and precisely, the priority demand elements that have high demand for pedestrian friendliness but poor actual effect and are closely related to the frequency of walking trips are identified,as well as the demand levels that need to be urgently improved. The results show that "safety needs" are among the needs of the old community renovation.(3)On the basis of this,we evaluated the demand for pedestrian friendliness in old communities according to the different priority demand factors. The results of the survey showed that the overall demand index of pedestrians in old communities was0.782,among which five communities, namely Fushan Garden,Taoyuan District 1,Baiyian Community,Xianshui Garden and Hongdu Iron and Steel Factory Dormitory, were not satisfied with the average value, indicating that these five communities were the priorities for improvement. On this basis, targeted pedestrian-friendly optimization countermeasures are proposed in response to the results to meet the individual needs of residents for walking trips.Based on Maslow’s needs theory, this paper conducts research on pedestrian friendliness assessment for old communities, and constructs a theoretical system and quantitative assessment method for pedestrian friendliness assessment of old communities in Nanchang. At the same time,it will,to a certain extent, expand and enrich the perspectives and ideas related to the evaluation of pedestrian friendliness in old communities. However, this study is still inadequate and needs to be further developed in terms of pedestrian friendliness needs of different types of communities, different age groups and different groups, multiple comprehensive influencing factors and community pedestrian friendliness optimization strategies.
