With the rapid advancement of China’s urbanization and the improvement of people’s living standards, the number of motor vehicles in the cities has increased sharply, making the urban infrastructure continue to favor motor vehicle travel, and the urban walking environment continues to deteriorate.Walking as a low-carbon and green way of travel has gradually attracted people’s attention in recent years.Walking can not only promote people’s health, reduce urban carbon dioxide emissions, but also promote residents’ social interaction and enhance urban vitality.Especially in newly built urban areas such as university towns, due to the short construction time, the facilities are not well developed, and there is a lack of update iterations. Moreover, the planning of new built-up areas often regards the convenience of motor vehicle travel as the main goal, while ignoring the creation of a pedestrian environment. The characteristics of closed and semi-closed management common in Chinese universities have led to the separation of the university campus from the urban environment. It is difficult for teachers and students to reach the service facilities outside the campus on foot, and it is difficult to truly interact with the society. The accumulation of various problems makes new construction The problem of walkability in university towns is further highlighted. Therefore, this paper focuses on the pedestrian environment of the new university town, and tries to carry out the research on the walkability of the new university town from the perspectives of the distribution characteristics of the new university town facilities, the current situation of the pedestrian space, and the students’ travel needs. It is hoped that this research will provide a basis for the actual construction and sustainable development of pedestrian spaces in university towns. This thesis first introduces the research background and origin, summarizes the relevant theories of "walkability",and sorts out the more mature walkability measurement methods, basic needs of walking and environmental impact factors.Combined with the walking demand hierarchy theory, the walkability environmental impact factors are divided into meso-scale factors and micro-scale factors. The former is about the pedestrian support degree in urban planning, which is mainly based on the accessibility of daily facilities, and also includes land use.Mixed with diversity, road connectivity, etc.;the latter focuses on the experience of walking, including safety, continuity of walking facilities, comfort and pleasure.Secondly, taking the core area of Chongqing University Town as a research sample, drawing on the concept of the existing "Walk Score",aiming at the characteristics of college students as the main population of the University Town, the facilities are reclassified according to the students’ walking needs;POI is the data source, and GIS is used for analysis to carry out walkability evaluation based on facility distribution. Then, the questionnaire was used to obtain the actual travel habits and facility usage habits of students in each school, and combined with the heat map of human flow to verify and supplement the walkability evaluation results based on the facility layout.According to the established typical microscopic pedestrian environment evaluation elements,on-site investigations were conducted on the pedestrian environment of key streets in the study area, which further supplemented the evaluation of the pedestrian environment from the user’s perspective. The conclusion is that the overall walkability is high in the east, low in the north and south and west, and the overall distribution of service facilities is uneven.Except for buses, express stations and shopping facilities that can basically meet the needs of teachers and students, the spatial distribution and quantity of other facilities are relatively lacking. There are obvious differences in the walkability of the three schools. The walkability score of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts is higher than that of Chongqing Normal University and Chongqing University. The road as a whole ignores the improvement of the attraction and pleasure of the walking environment. The road sections adjacent to the school boundary often form negative spaces due to the lack of vivid street fa(?)ades and monotonous streetscapes and single functions and lack of popularity. Finally,on the basis of the analysis, the optimization and improvement strategy of the walkability of the university town is proposed, including the layout of daily service facilities, the optimization and opening strategy of the campus boundary, and the construction of the pedestrian network. And a key pedestrian node has been designed for environmental renovation.
