Construction And Application Of Pattern Language For Public Space In Traditional Villages In Youyang

The Chongqing Youyang village cluster is a representative of traditional village construction techniques in the Wuling Mountains region.Based on the Tujia ethnic group’s building techniques,it incorporates numerous external skills,resulting in an overall simple and elegant style that respects the environment,adapts to local conditions,and uses local materials.The expression of ethnic customs is rich and simple.With the introduction of the rural revitalization strategy and large amounts of funding,the state has focused resources on upgrading traditional villages.However,in terms of actual construction,public spaces have been neglected due to a lack of research and practice,leading to the destruction of many public spaces.Cultural exchange gives rise to culture,meaning,and core significance,and village public spaces are important carriers that link all aspects of village life.It is of great significance to study and preserve the space treatment techniques,inherit the building skills,preserve their sustainability,and develop their vitality.This article explores the public spaces of the national-level traditional villages in Youyang using the theoretical method of pattern language.Based on detailed research,the C-3P landscape analysis logic is used to identify four language contexts for Youyang’s traditional villages.The spatial carriers,landscape elements,basic spatial units,composite spatial units,and spatial clusters of the river-type,stream-type,and wellgarden-type are abstractly described and formed into a system of pattern language vocabulary consisting of letters,words,and phrases.Furthermore,construction methods and expression techniques are constructed between them,abstracted in a diagrammatic way,and formed into a system of graphic syntax and rhetorical techniques.Drawing on research from sociology,architecture,folklore studies,and other related fields,the article attempts to explore the underlying logic and spiritual connotations of this set of building methods,investigate their hierarchical relationships,functions,patterns,and processes,and compare them with their current status to construct a complete landscape perception,i.e.,pattern language semantics.Finally,based on the construction of the pattern language for public spaces in Youyang’s traditional villages,the article discusses its summary,evaluation,and application methods.Using the representative stream-type traditional village,Shan Yang Zhai,as an example,the article analyzes and makes corresponding planning and design decisions using the pattern language method.The exploration shows that the public spaces of traditional villages in Youyang are the important core and carrier of connecting the collective and individual matters and objects in the village.It is a complete system with multiple levels.Currently,under the impact of external forces,the system has been partially destroyed and the balance is difficult to maintain.The pattern language of public spaces in traditional villages in Youyang has the function of interpreting this systematic and hierarchical feature.Under reasonable contextual conditions,it can maintain the original system to a certain extent and accept modern objects based on its own growth and adaptation characteristics.This provides ideas for effective protection and renewal,and plays a certain role in promoting the protection,renewal,and development of traditional village public spaces.
