| In recent years,China’s cities have shifted their development focus from "quantity" to "quality",and the renovation and transformation of existing old residential areas has become a highly attention-worthy topic in the urban development process. This study focuses on the outdoor space renewal of old residential areas and identifies issues such as poor spatial quality, single functionality, and inability to meet the diverse needs of residents, which significantly impact the quality of life for residents over time.Compared to newly built residential areas, the outdoor space resources in old residential areas are extremely limited, and conventional methods of outdoor space renewal only focus on image enhancement and facility optimization, which cannot fundamentally meet the increasing demands of residents’ quality of life. Therefore, this study aims to address the contradiction between the limited outdoor space resources in old residential areas and the diverse needs of residents by prioritizing and categorizing residents’ needs based on urgency, and seeks the most efficient strategies and methods for outdoor space renewal in old residential areas,in order to comprehensively promote urban construction in China. The study selected the typical old residential area of Hepan Xin Cun in Hangzhou City as a sample to understand the current status of outdoor spaces in Hepan Xin Cun from four dimensions: safety,aesthetics,aging-friendly features, and livability. The study analyzed the current issues related to spatial structure, public spaces, facilities and small features, and the interface between buildings at three spatial levels.Subsequently, based on the theoretical foundation of demand hierarchy and space generation, the study clarified the methods of dividing demand hierarchy and the strategic orientation of space design, and established a research path for outdoor space renewal and construction in old residential areas under limited resources. The study first extracted the demand indicators for outdoor space renewal in Hepan Xin Cun through literature review and field investigations, and constructed a demand indicator system. Then, through questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews, the functional needs of Hepan Xin Cun residents for outdoor spaces were obtained.Using the ImportancePerformance Analysis(IPA)method,an "average-value standard-deviation" demand coupling model was constructed to classify the demand hierarchy of residents, assess the urgency of renewal, and summarize the necessary and improvement demands, which were then transformed into functional modules for outdoor space renewal in Hepan Xin Cun.Considering factors such as the aging population in Hepan Xin Cun,the interests of homeowners, and the rigid demands of working population, the study further conducted correlation analysis between population characteristics and demand, extracted relevant demand indicators from the candidate demands, and optimized and completed the functional modules for outdoor space renewal in Hepan Xin Cun,thus constructing a functional menu for demand-function translation. The study matches the detailed functions of outdoor space renewal in Hepan Xin Cun with the corresponding spatial levels, and constructs a system for outdoor space renewal in Hepan Xin Cun.In terms of spatial structure, optimization of traffic flow lines is carried out through a review of traffic patterns. In terms of public space, the study takes residents’ behavior as the entry point, captures the behavioral characteristics of residents in outdoor spaces through methods such as activity logging and behavior mapping, and explores their behavioral patterns and spatial preferences.A design approach of "space composition" is proposed for public space renewal, completing the process of "behavior-space" generation. In terms of facilities and architectural interfaces, composite design of facilities is conducted to enhance their functional quality, and texture and hierarchy reconstruction of building interfaces is carried out to improve the image of building facades. These efforts are integrated into a comprehensive strategy for outdoor space renewal in Hepan Xin Cun.Finally, the research puts the outdoor space renewal of Riverbank New Village into practice, providing theoretical support and design basis for the renewal work of similar old residential areas with extremely limited spatial resources. |
