| The theory of intertextuality, which emerged in the late 1960s,has exerted a strong influence on the development of translation studies all over the world.According to the theory, texts have no fixed boundaries. They refer to each other, forming an open network with unlimited potential. At the same time, all contexts, whether political, economic, social, psychological or historical, become inter-texts,which means that the interaction between different cultural forms will inevitably produce some kind of intertextual relationship. In terms of translation, for one thing, the target language text is closely related to the culture, society and the background of the source language text. For another, the target language text is influenced by the culture, society and the background of the translator himself. From this perspective, translation itself is a text-based intertextual activity. As one of the oldest and most outstanding military books in China,The Art of War has always been highly respected and studied by numerous scholars at home and abroad for thousands of years. We Chinese people cannot cherish and study it too much.In this thesis, the author introduces intertextuality into the study of English translation of The Art of War from three aspects:intertextuality between the source text and the source language, intertextuality between the source text and the target texts and intertextuality between the four target texts,so as to compare the different translation strategies of the four translators and then explore effective channels and ways to translate and introduce more Chinese classics for global communication, finally achieving the goal of promoting excellent Chinese culture to "go abroad". |
