The jury system plays an irreplaceable role in American judicial system. As a responsibility shared by all eligible citizens, the jury duty is of great significance to ensure the operation and the function of the jury system. Therefore, this thesis selects the transcript of Jury Duty:You Make a Difference,a TV program concerning facts and procedures of the jury duty for translation, and makes an analytical report on the translation practice. In view of the characteristics of the source text and the challenges in translation, this thesis adopts the methods of direct translation and oblique translation based on the translation theory of Vinay and Darbelnet to discuss the translation of a legal text with an obvious colloquial style.Through typical translation examples, the thesis specifically focuses on the analysis of strategies in the translation of legal terms, proper nouns, idioms and long and difficult sentences.Under the guidance of Vinay and Darbelnet’s model, borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation and equivalence are the main techniques to solve the difficulties in translation. In addition, this thesis agrees to and adopts a series of new translations of terms related to the jury system translated by Professor Hu Zhaoyun, for example,“决认,决认团"for"jury".Compared with other types of translation, legal translation is not only the communication across cultures and languages, but also the communication across different legal systems. Thus, the purpose of the translation practice is,on the one hand,to popularize and disseminate more knowledge about the jury system,so as to promote the spirit of rule of law and to provide a favourable reference for the development of the Chinese judicial system through the relatively mature experience of American jury system. On the other hand, the study of the specific problems in legal translation from Vinay and Darbelnet’s model of translation is conducive to making a positive attempt to enrich the practice of legal translation and deepen the research on the strategies of legal translation.
