"Dumb English" has always been a phenomenon in English teaching due to the unbalanced development of listening,speaking and reading skills,which is caused by the mismatch between the amount of language input and output,i.e.the basic conditions for learning a foreign language are not met.The task-based teaching method can make up for these deficiencies.It is learner-centered,task-based and scenario-based,and provides opportunities to use the language by creating authentic language situations for learners,thus developing students’ comprehensive pragmatic skills.At the same time,task-based teaching method is also the teaching method recommended by the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education.This study focuses on two units of Unit5 and Unit7 in the first book of Grade 6of elementary school English of Shanghai Education Edition.Through two rounds of action research in S elementary school in S city,we investigate how the task-based teaching method can be better used in teaching English speaking in elementary school and develop students’ speaking ability.The main contents of the thesis are as follows: the introduction mainly describes the research background,research significance,basic definition and the current situation of domestic and international research on task-based teaching method through combing the domestic and international literature;the first chapter describes the research design of task-based teaching method applied to elementary English speaking teaching.The main research method of this study is action research method,which is supported by literature research method,questionnaire survey method and interview method;Chapter 2 specifies the implementation process of the two rounds of action research,and the continuous reflection and improvement in the action in order to better carry out the research;Chapter 3 analyzes the effect of action research,and investigates students’ and teachers’ views on task-based teaching method after the two rounds of action research through questionnaire survey and interview.Chapter 3analyzes the effects of the action research by investigating students’ and teachers’ views on task-based teaching methods after the two rounds of action research through questionnaires and interviews,as well as organizing the post-class reflections of the two rounds of action research to analyze the effects of the research.Chapter 4summarizes the problems in the application of task-based teaching method to English speaking teaching in elementary school.After the action research,the problems were summarized into the following three aspects: classroom design,classroom teaching,and teachers themselves,by combining the results of the survey on teachers and students as well as the researcher’s teaching reflections;Chapter 5 mainly puts forward the corresponding implementation suggestions based on the problems revealed during the action research.To address these problems,teachers should design tasks that fit students’ cognition before class,allocate time reasonably for teaching sessions,focus on stimulating students’ background knowledge during class,use short and easy-to-understand task instructions to ensure students’ understanding,and adapt to the change of classroom roles.At the same time,teachers should change the concept of grammar first and strengthen their classroom management skills and knowledge in order to better use task-based teaching methods to develop students’ speaking skills. |
