Translation Of Informative Texts From The Perspective Of Text Typology

The Story of Light Science,a professional popular science work,covers optical research from ancient times to the present.The translation materials excerpted from the first,second and fifth chapters are taken as an example to explore the guiding significance of text typology to the translation of informative texts.This thesis applies the translation strategy of informative text in the text typology that the translator should render the source text accurately and completely with the orientation of target language,and highlights translation methods of scientific texts at the lexical and syntactic levels.At the lexical level,the precise meaning of a generic word used in a scientific context is pinpointed and translated based on proper inferencing;conversion of parts of speech can be utilized for better rendering in the target language;and the method of amplification can be adopted to help clarify the information that is originally vague in the source text and cater to the expressive convention in the target language.At the syntactic level,passive voice that is used to achieve objectivity is appropriately adjusted to the active voice by adopting the translation method of voice conversion,which achieves greater textual flow and readability.Sentences can also be divided into meaning units and recombined to properly place lengthy modifiers and adjust logical sequences in accordance with the patterns of English and Chinese.Based on the translation guideline proposed by Reiss,translators should adopt appropriate and flexible translation methods according to different text types and specific translation difficulties.
