| China is leading her people to a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and strive for building a great modern socialist country for a new era.In the new era,Guangdong continues to write a new chapter of its reform and opening-up and gives full play to the pioneer and pilot zone in reform and opening-up.The history of Guangdong’s reform and opening-up is a significant part of the national reform and openingup. It is particularly vital to review and summarize the reform and opening-up history and experience in Guangdong. It is of great value to carry forward the spirit of reform and openingup and create a new situation of socialism with Chinese characteristics for the new era in academic study and social practice. The source text of this translation report is selected from the History of Guangdong’s Reform and Opening Up(1978~2018),the first-ever academic monograph that systematically summarizes the practice, achievements and experience of the 40 years of reform and openingup in Guangdong. It records the significant events and changes of Guangdong in the fields of economy, politics, culture, society, ecological civilization and the Party building since reform and opening-up.Chapter 20,the source text of the current report, mainly introduces Guangdong’s efforts on creating a new landscape in all-around opening-up during the deepening and expansion of reform and opening-up.The English translation of this book is hoped to facilitate the overseas readers’ understanding of the history of reform and opening-up in Guangdong, and to tell the true story of China and make our voice heard. This translation report is guided by the Adaptation Theory put forward by Jef Verschueren. The theory claims that the process of using language consists of the continuous making of linguistic choices, which concerns the source and target language rules and habits and the exchange of thinking patterns of two different social and cultural backgrounds.Translation is a process in which the translator is supposed to make continuous linguistics choices to adapt to the target readers. When translating the History of Guangdong’s Reform and Opening Up(1978~2018),the translator focuses on the choices of wording, adjustment of linguistic structures and adaptation of cultures on the basis of the linguistic, social and cultural factors of the source text.By employing the structural objects of adaptability, contextual correlates of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and the salience of the adaptation processes, the report aims to help the target readers to precisely understand the target text and have adaptive reading expectations.During the pre-translation process, the translator first studies the source text and familiarizes herself with related parallel texts. With professional dictionaries, related term banks and corpora, the translator establishes a Chinese-English glossary to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the translation. While translating the source text, drawing upon the Adaptation Theory, structural objects of adaptability, contextual correlates of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and the salience of the adaptation processes in particular, the translator determines the specific translation methods for adapting to the target language in different social and cultural backgrounds, translators’ consciousness and other circumstances. The translator focuses on the key points that ask for the adaptation so as to employ more appropriate and adaptive translation approaches. In the post-translation process, the translator first proofreads the target text on her own and makes further revisions and refinements according to the suggestions proposed by professionals in order to ensure the quality of the target text. This translation report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is a general description of the translation project. The second chapter demonstrates the three periods of translation processes. The third chapter is an overview of the Adaptation Theory, which serves as the theoretical basis for the translation practice. The fourth chapter is devoted to the case analyses.Based on the structural objects and contextual correlates, the translator makes adaptive choices at the lexical, syntactic and discourse levels, and employs flexible translation methods to achieve dynamic adaptation. The last chapter reflects on the translation practice by summarizing the problems encountered and providing feasible solutions. |
