| Since 2019,various English textbooks have been revised in line with the English curriculum standards(2017)and a comprehensive conception of the newly designed grammar content in these textbooks could help teachers to properly use the textbooks so as to improve the quality of grammar teaching.Therefore,based on the Processability Theory,the Explicit and Implicit Knowledge,the Information Processing Theory and the Systemic Functional Grammar Theory,the thesis aims to make a probe into the design of grammar content in one of those widely-used textbooks,the New Standard English(short for NSE)through text analysis and data analysis in order to answer the following questions: What grammar items are presented in the grammar section of NSE(2019 version)? And how are they organized in the new textbooks? What types of grammar learning activities are adopted in these textbooks? How do the grammatical structures relate to the discourse?After analysis,it is found that the NSE covers most of the grammar items that are required by the new curriculum standards.And the main focus of these grammar items is on the syntax.These grammatical structures are hierarchically and cyclically organized.Besides,concerning the types of grammar learning activities,the NSE provides more production activities than reception activities.Among the four types of output-based activities,the meaningful practice and communicative activity aiming at the use of language and the expression of meanings are given the most attention to while the mechanical practice focusing on language forms the least.The new textbook also emphasizes consciousness-raising activities,in which teaching techniques of concept questions and input enhancement are used to promote the learning and understanding of grammar knowledge.In terms of language input,the NSE contains abundant multimodal discourses,among which the written mode takes the dominate position in grammar learning.Also,the new textbook provides numerous pictures as visual materials to enhance grammar learning in richer contexts.However,as for cohesion devise,only a few activities in the new textbook involve the use of grammatical structures as cohesion devices to construct a discourse.Before the 2019 NSE textbooks are widely promoted across the country,the author hopes that the study on grammar content in the textbook can provide references for the editors to compile grammar learning materials in textbooks,and more importantly,it can help teachers and students to use the textbook in a proper way in the process of real teaching and learning English. |
