| Campus language landscape focuses on the use of campus language and characters,and pays attention to the function and characteristics of language signs in public space.The construction of campus language landscape directly affects the image of colleges and universities and the cross-cultural adaptation of overseas students to campus language landscape.The cross-cultural adaptation of international students is a highly situational compound experience.Through the campus language landscape,international students can learn the norms of guiding actions contextually,feel the language and culture of the host country,overcome the psychological and social cultural pressure,and realize the re-socialization of the unfamiliar environment.The following research questions are raised:What is the current situation of the campus language landscape?International Students’ Cross-cultural Adaptation to the Language Landscape?How to improve the campus language landscape and enhance the cross-cultural adaptability to the campus language landscape?First of all,according to the framework of campus language landscape analysis,from the aspects of code orientation,inscription,placement,culture and so on,this paper analyzes the campus language landscape of different types and spaces.According to the types,the campus language landscape can be divided into guidance,signage,information,warning,advertisement and service language landscape.According to the space,the campus language landscape can be divided into teaching area,transportation area,business area,living area and ecological scenic area.In addition,international students’ cross-cultural adaptation to campus language landscape is studied according to the analysis framework of cross-cultural adaptation and the analysis framework of influencing factors of cross-cultural adaptation.The former is analyzed from psychological and social cultural adaptation,while the latter is analyzed from individual internal factors and external language environment factors.Secondly,the field investigation method is used to study the language landscape of a campus in Shandong Province,and the characteristics of language and cultural connotation are summarized:according to types,guiding language landscape,the combination of code is mainly simplified Chinese(main code)+English(auxiliary code);Scene placement is mostly,but deviant placement is rarely;The fonts are mainly general fonts;Show virtuous and virtuous culture.Signage language landscape,Chinese monolingual,simple and traditional;Most of them are scenario-based placement,with both de-contextualization placement and a little deviant placement.The number of art words is large,the carrier material is diverse;Reflect educational,cultural images,etc.Information,Chinese code,simple and traditional Chinese,auxiliary code for English,other codes are very few;Contextualized placement is the main one,while contextualized placement is more.A large number of artistic bodies;Use wood and stone and other special materials;Reflect history,art,science and education,Party history and other culture.Warning language landscape,outdoor code is mostly monolingual,while indoor code is mostly bilingual.Scene placement mainly,but deviant placement rarely;General font mainly;Reflect civilized norms,institutional culture,etc.Advertisements,mainly single language Chinese,other codes sometimes as decoration;Indoor layout follows scene layout,outdoor layout is mainly contextualized,and deviant layout is relatively more.A large number of art words;Carrier material is low;Show commercial culture and trend,literature and art,etc.Service language landscape,most of the code combinations are Chinese-English bilingual,and there are few traditional characters and other language codes.The status of Chinese-English codes is relatively equal.Scene placement;Universal font,material for electronic display;Reflect science,education,institutional culture,etc.According to the functional space,the teaching area is mainly monolingual Chinese,with a considerable number of Chinese-English bilinguals and a small number of English monolinguals.Contextualized placement is the main part,while contextualized placement is the minor part.General fonts,art words,conventional carrier material,both electronic display;Performance of literature,art,history,science and education culture.The living area is mainly monolingual Chinese,with few bilingual combinations and few other codes.Contextualized placement is dominant,while contextualized placement and deviant placement are more prevalent.General font,ordinary material;Culture of art,region,food and so on.In the commercial area,Chinese is mainly monolingual,with few bilingual combinations and more languages,including English,Japanese,Korean and other codes;The indoor layout is mainly scenario-based,while the other layout methods are outdoor.Art font,material ordinary;Reflect commercial culture,fashion art,etc.In the ecological scenic spot,Chinese is mainly monolingual,with few bilingual combinations.Scenario-based placement;The main art font,multi-purpose stone,wood;Show art and history.Traffic area,monolingual code and Chinese-English bilingual;Scene placement;Common font,common material;The expression of civilized norms,institutional culture,etc.Thirdly,a questionnaire survey is conducted on the intercultural adaptation of the campus language landscape.It is found that the overall adaptation degree of the campus language landscape is not so good.Psychological adaptation is lower than sociocultural adaptation.According to the region,teaching area and living area psychological adaptation is not good,ecological scenic spot social and cultural adaptation is difficult;According to the type,the psychological adaptation of warning and service language landscape is not good,and the social and cultural adaptation of service language landscape is not good.Reasons:Part of the language landscape information imbalance,lack of translation;The number of foreign languages is small,and strong foreign languages bring psychological pressure to international students;The campus language landscape is not fit enough for international students,and its standardization and legibility are not high enough.Cultural difficulty is different,cultural background and traditional Chinese characters are difficult to understand;Lack of multicultural expression.In addition,factors are positively related to the adaptation degree of campus language landscape:"Chinese level","length of stay in the school","mastery of communication and institutional culture","cognitive complexity" and other factors of personal communication ability,"resilience" and other factors of personal preference,"Chinese media" and other social communication factors of host country and ethnic group,"the normative readability of language landscape" and other external environmental factors.Negative correlation factors include host country and ethnic social communication factors such as "mass media using mother tongue or international common language" and external environmental factors such as "language power caused by dominant languages".Finally,in view of the existing problems,from the external environment and personal internal factors to put forward suggestions.To improve the cross-cultural adaptation to the external environment,improve the legibility of language landscape writing and the standardization of translation,add a multicultural language landscape;In terms of enhancing cross-cultural adaptability,it advocates the use of Chinese mass media and holds cultural lectures to promote cultural understanding of the campus language landscape.Through the improvement of external environment and internal efforts,it can accelerate cross-cultural adaptation,help international students adapt to the campus language landscape,and form a campus language and cultural environment conducive to cross-cultural adaptation of international students. |
