| The culture study of Zhongdu in the Jin dynasty is an important part of the study of the Jin dynasty society,and an important part of the study of the culture of China’s ancient capitals.In the Jin dynasty,since the relocation of the capital to Hailing,the status of the central capital as the political centre of the Jin dynasty was established,and cultural development was flourishing,thus opening a new chapter in the culture of Beijing’s ancient capital.This paper focuses on the surviving stone inscriptions and local chronicles,in an attempt to explore the culture of Zhongdu in a comprehensive and in-depth manner,with a view to outlining the overall development of the culture of Zhongdu.The long history of Zhongdu,its extremely important geographical location,the excellent natural conditions in the region and the high level of economic development have laid a solid foundation for the prosperous development of Zhongdu culture.An analysis of the stone inscriptions and the local chronicles,many official educational institutions were set up in Zhongdu and that private education flourished,and it is noteworthy that the number of Jinshi in the Zhongdu was the largest in the country at the prefectural and state administrative levels.In terms of religion,Buddhist beliefs in Zhongdu were spread across all social classes,Buddhist temples were more numerous and,in addition to holding Buddhist activities,they also undertook functions such as pleasure trips,relief work and imperial examinations.The development of Taoism was strongly supported by the ruling class,and the leaders of the Quanzhen Daoism,Qiu Chuji,Wang Chuyi and Liu Chuxuan,were summoned by the emperor to the central capital to talk about Taoist doctrine and state affairs,in addition to other sects of Taoists who were also summoned to Zhongdu to engage in missionary activities.The palaces,gardens and monuments of Zhongdu are rich in scenery,mostly built during the reigns of Hailing Wang,Jin Shizong and Jin Zhangzong,leaving a valuable cultural heritage for future generations.The social life of Zhongdu was rich and colourful,literature and art flourished,with important achievements in poetry,painting,music and drama,as well as progress in food,clothing,marriage and funeral customs.The diverse ethnic composition of Zhongdu,the interaction,exchange and blending of various ethnic cultures have created a unique style of culture in Zhongdu.The development of the culture of Zhongdu had a profound impact on later generations.According to Beijing’s local chronicles,the planning of the capital city directly influenced the urban construction of the Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties,and many aspects of the culture of Zhongdu continued to develop for the Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties.At the same time,the material and spiritual culture formed by Zhongdu in the Jin dynasty is of great significance to the study of ancient capital culture and has become an important part of the study of Beijing’s ancient capital. |
