Since the reform and opening up of China,as a new subcultural phenomenon, the emergence and development of Chinese rock music has had a significant impact on Chinese popular culture and media culture.Despite early social perceptions of rock music as a "flooded" imported culture, its "otherness" and "rebelliousness" were often rejected by mainstream culture and the general public. In the 1980 s,Cui Jian,Dou Wei,He Yong,Black Panther and Tang Dynasty became cult icons in the hearts of rock music lovers and the representative symbols of Chinese rock music. With the passage of time, after the 2000 s,rock music has not been the same as its heyday. For this reason, the dissertation takes the Birmingham School’s media theory and subculture theory as an entry point to explore the role of the media in transmitting and shaping the rebellious character of rock music in China during the development of the era.The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter provides an overview of the spread of rock music in China. The first section introduces the development of rock music as an imported culture in China. The second section explores the different media channels through which rock music has been disseminated.By sorting out the development process of rock music, the thesis argues that rock music is an externalization of social background and spirit, and its development in different periods was also influenced by political and cultural factors. The second chapter explores the interpretation of rock music’s media externalization and its spiritual connotation.By introducing the meaning of media texts, the first section shows that the media is the window for audiences to know and understand rock music, and emphasizes the importance of the media for the dissemination of rock music. The second section introduces the spiritual connotation of the rebelliousness of Chinese rock music, which audiences externalize as an act of liberation of their bodies after being exposed to rock music, and thus gain pleasure. However, this pleasure produces some negative effects that go against social order and stability, which explains why rock music has long been rejected by the mainstream culture. Therefore, the mainstream culture needs to dissipate and reshape the rebelliousness in rock music through the medium to ensure social stability.Chapter 3 analyzes the role of the media in spreading and shaping the rebelliousness of rock music. The first section analyzes the media’s strategy of creating a "moral panic" about rock music and bringing rock music to the forefront as a manifestation of social crisis through a case study of the news media’s coverage of the "Zang Tianshuo gang-related" incident. This strategy has weakened the strength of rock music’s rebellious representation in the communication process. The second section points out that rock music as a subculture, rebelliousness is its primary characteristic, and also the object of media targeting and reshaping. The indulgence of rock music in commercialization is the main direction and result of media shaping.Chapter 4 examines the results and revelations of the mainstream media’s incorporation of rock and roll. The first section looks at the evolution of Chinese rock music from a rebellious symbol to a rational and pluralistic state in terms of the fluidity of the media’s tendency to report on rock music,a change that reflects the results of the media’s long-term tendency to report on rock music. The second section explores the insights of mainstream media’s intake of rock music, including transforming the sensory structure of audiences and promoting the reshaping and reproduction of social consensus.By exploring the role of the media in news coverage activities,it is possible to understand how the media influences and shapes people’s perceptions and opinions of rock music through the construction of semantic frames. The thesis aims to explore the important role played by the media in the dissemination of rock music in China.Rock music itself has the characteristics of "alternative" and "rebellion" against the mainstream culture, which is externalized by listeners as a kind of physical liberation. This liberation challenges the mainstream cultural order and makes the mainstream culture feel threatened and uneasy. As a result, mainstream culture influences and reshapes its rebelliousness through the media under its control, transforming it into a commercialized style that is more in line with social interests. At the same time, the media also reconstructs the meaning of "rebellion" in rock music. This reconfiguration has created a generation gap in understanding the connotation of rebelliousness between the rock generation and the youth, and the rebellion has become youthful and formalized as a pursuit of indulgence and excessive energy, thus achieving social stability and harmony. Thus, the medium is not only a tool for transmitting information in the process of spreading Chinese rock music, but also demonstrates a power to influence cultural development.
