Group portrait style character documentaries,as a niche branch of documentaries,focus on shooting diverse real-life character "groups" and use real and objective lens language to record the living environment,living conditions,work and deeds of multiple characters.The aim is to elaborate and explore typical and unique individual emotions in the group,awaken and stimulate the audience’s empathy and consciousness identification,Subsequently,it triggers the audience to reflect and reflect on its main theme and emotional expression.This article focuses on exploring the narrative strategies of group portrait style character documentaries,mainly based on narrative theory,combined with relevant excellent documentary films and my own creative practice in recent years,attempting to comprehensively and systematically sort out group portrait style character documentaries.By analyzing and summarizing the uniqueness of group portrait style character documentaries,we delve into their narrative and aesthetic characteristics,and attempt to summarize the diverse narrative techniques,artistic emotional expression,and audio-visual language.This article is mainly divided into five parts to elaborate on the narrative strategies of group portrait style character documentaries.The first chapter defines the concepts of group portraits and group portrait style character documentaries,and elaborates on relevant theories,aiming to provide a theoretical basis for subsequent research.By sorting out existing group portrait style documentary works,analyzing their creative characteristics and artistic value,and then clarifying the research direction of the paper.Chapter 2 further deepens the text analysis of group portrait style character documentaries,and analyzes and summarizes them from two aspects: creative characteristics and artistic characteristics.The creation of group portrait style character documentaries has a certain degree of particularity,and the creator’s choice of shooting objects can affect the theme and emotional expression of the work.By elaborating on the diverse character selection and story expression in the film,it can be seen that this type of documentary not only meets the aesthetic needs of the audience,but also confirms the special narrative expression of group portrait style character documentaries.On this basis,Chapter 3 attempts to conduct a textual analysis of group portrait style character documentaries from a macro perspective,and explores the narrative value contained in such documentaries from three dimensions: history,humanities,and communication.Chapter 4,based on the theoretical framework of narratology,analyzes the narrative characteristics of group portrait character documentaries,and explores the artistic expression methods of group portrait character documentaries from three aspects: narrative structure,narrative perspective,and narrative rhythm.Since the New Documentary Film Movement in the1980 s,documentary creation has tended towards storytelling,and non-linear narrative has become one of the important forms of storytelling in documentaries.This trend has also been fully reflected in group like character documentaries.In terms of narrative perspective,creators present different narrative effects and emotional experiences to the audience by choosing different narrative perspectives.In addition,through the analysis of narrative rhythm,it is possible to intuitively understand the creators’ control in handling multiple characters and emotional transmission in this type of documentary.Chapter 5 analyzes the narrative language in group portrait style character documentaries,focusing on two aspects: visual language and auditory language.The creators of group portrait style character documentaries pour into their thoughts,emotions,and value orientations.In terms of visual language,it focuses on exploring the visual art experience created by long shots,scenery,and light and shadow,which is the main way to express the emotions of the film and an important embodiment of the creator’s personal aesthetics.In terms of auditory language,the roles of commentary,simultaneous sound,and music were discussed.In general,characters are an important carrier of emotional expression in documentaries,and narrative is the opportunity and driving force to promote the communication of ideas in group portrait style documentaries.Artistic characters and events are presented to the audience through diverse narrative strategies,allowing the audience to grasp the value and emotions of group portraits,thereby creating greater communication space for their group portrait style documentaries,which is worthy of in-depth research.
