John Fiske is a representative figure in the study of popular culture theory by the Birmingham School in the UK.His representative work "Television Culture" takes television texts and television audiences as the research entry point, and deeply analyzes the generation of meaning in television texts and the audience’s interpretation of television texts. He not only regards television programs as representative media of mass culture media, but also focuses on exploring the impact of television programs on the development of social mass culture,Moreover, viewing television programs as a discourse structure containing multiple potential meanings, and analyzing and exploring the generation and dissemination of the meaning of television texts, highlights Fiske’s literary and artistic views.Fisk believes that although television programs represent the development direction of mainstream ideology in a certain sense,in order to better cater to various social discourses and gain widespread popularity, television programs must provide different interpretations for audiences from different social classes, thus making television programs a discourse structure with multiple potential meanings. At the same time,as the main body of television text interpretation, the audience is not blindly in a passive position, passively accepting the mainstream culture transmitted by television programs.Instead, they can make different interpretations based on their different social roles, allowing the dominant public group to resist mainstream cultural forms and obtain meaning that meets their own needs, thereby obtaining the joy of watching television programs. The main content of this article is divided into three parts.Firstly, the text is a discourse structure with multiple potential meanings.Fiske regards television text as a type of literary text, believing that it generates polysemy through the use of realistic forms while carrying multiple voices and heterogeneous discourse, and ultimately by constructing the discourse subject status. The second part discusses narrative as a mechanism for generating textual meaning.Based on realism narrative, structuralism narrative, and gender oriented narrative,he discusses the impact of different narrative modes on the generation and interpretation of textual meaning. The third part studies the audience of the text, who actively participate in the process of interpreting the text and can make different interpretations based on their own social roles. In summary, this article takes John Fiske’s "Television Culture" as the research object, and reveals John Fiske’s literary and artistic views contained in "Television Culture" through John Fiske’s generation of multiple potential meanings in television programs, the discourse structure and narrative style of television texts, and the audience’s participation and creation in the process of generating meanings in television texts,In order to enrich the existing research results on John Fiske’s cultural theory, and also provide reference and reflection for the generation of literary text meaning and audience acceptance research.
