The translation material of this report is excerpted from a military book called Hybrid Warfare: Future and Technologies by Ralph D.Thiele,a renowned German military scientist. The book mainly introduces how the world of the future will use numerous emerging and disruptive technologies to conduct political competition through hybrid warfare, and puts forward some measures for Western countries to cope with hybrid warfare. The translator translated the 14 to 19 sections of Chapter 5,Chapter 7,Appendix 5,and Abbreviations, totaling more than 12,000 words. This part focuses on the key advanced technologies in hybrid warfare and the measures taken by Western countries to cope with hybrid warfare. The translator finds that the source text contains a large number of military terminologies, long and difficult sentences and passive sentences after analyzing the stylistic features and linguistic features of the source text. The text is objective and rigorous, logical and compact.According to Reiss’ s classification of text types, this book belongs to informative text, which mainly focuses on accurate conveying of information. In the process of translation, the accurate conveying of information and the readability of the target text need to be carefully taken into consideration.According to Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the translator should take into account the response of the target language readers, not stick to the form and focus on the accurate conveying of meaning.Guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the translator focuses on analyzing the difficulties encountered in translation practice at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels. At the lexical level,on the basis of searching for relevant parallel texts, the translator accurately convey the meaning of words through some translation methods such as conversion, literal translation, transference, and semantic extension. At the syntactic level, the translator has made the translation more idiomatic and natural through the methods of division and reconstruction. At the textual level, the translator achieves the coherence of the source text mainly through the translation of pronouns and the addition of conjunction.Through this translation practice, the translator has analyzed the difficulties in translation and accumulated some translation skills and experience of military texts. The translator also expects that this translation report will serve as a resource for future military text translation projects as well as case studies for related academic research on military translation.
