| From the perspective of Bourdieu’ s sociology, this thesis makes a case study of the C-E translation of E’erguna He You’an with the concept of “habitus” as the core of the theoretical tool.First, the thesis reviews the key concepts in Bourdieu’ s sociology, namely “habitus”,“field” and “capital”,and their application in translation studies.Second, considering the shortcoming of deviating from textual analysis and the advantages of external studies of Bourdieu’ s sociology in translation studies, this thesis elucidates its analysis logic of taking both internal and external research into account. Finally, based on the translation practice, the thesis,on the one hand, analyzes the influence of habitus on the translator’ s translation selection and strategies;on the other hand,it analyzes the influence of field and capital on habitus and discusses the translation-related behavior of publishing house. It is found that the translation selection and strategies of C-E translation of E’erguna He You’an are first of all affected by the translator’ s habitus.Bruce Humes’ s national literature habitus shaped in his socialization enabled him to be interested in the original text.In the process of specific translation, the “structed” and “structing”characteristics of habitus promoted Humes to focus attention on the acceptability of the translated text to enhance English readers’ reading experiences and to lay more emphasis on the adequacy of the translation at the same time to transmit the exotic culture to the greatest extent.Second, the interaction among habitus, field, and capital determines that the translation strategies and successful production of E’erguna He You’an are also the results of the publishing house’ s behaviors. For one thing, the continuous improvement of Chinese and Asian literature in the global literary field and the cultural capital of the translator Humes, the original work, and its author Chi Zijian make the novel conform to the western commercial publishing house’ s habitus of pursuing readers’ acceptability and market, promoting the C-E translation of the novel. For another, the publishing house has greater power in the translation field over the translator by virtue of its superior capital holding,so that its translation habitus of prioritizing readers’ acceptability and market effect also exerts an impact on the C-E translation strategies of the original work. |
