This report presents an analysis of the translation process used to translate and study the report “Understanding and countering China’s Approach to Economic Decoupling from the United States” issued by the Hudson Institute. The original report focuses, from an American perspective,on the challenges posed by Chinese economic decoupling and the political implications for China,as well as the response needed from the United States and its allies. The translation process was guided by Peter Newmark’s theory of communicative translation, with various translation techniques applied to overcome translation difficulties.Communicative translation emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the target reader to ensure that the translated message accurately conveys the original text’s meaning. When translating economic text,it involves adding some necessary information, using appropriate economic terminology, and paraphrasing economic connotations to eliminate reading and comprehension barriers for the target audience. The translation process also aims to achieve the desired communicative effect by converting parts of speech, shifting passive voice, and utilizing the Chinese four-character patterns to make the translation in consistency with the target language. In terms of target language,it involves breaking up long and difficult sentences into shorter ones,as well as reordering sentences to make the translation more logical and readable. While communicative translation focuses on conveying communicative effects,it also needs the translation to conform to the language form of the target language,so that the target language readers have the same reading experience as the source language readers.Through the analysis of this report,it has shown that the communicative translation theory can play a guiding role in the translation of economic texts. The author hopes the translation practice report can provide some valuable advice used for future economic texts translation.
