Technologies in the field of computer science, especially artificial intelligence, are pushing the society forward at a speed that no one has ever imagined. In order to make better use of this technology, the translation practice of artificial intelligence text is fairly essential. However, the translation of sci-tech texts is delicate and rigorous. It demands accurate transmission of professional information contained in the source text, which poses a great challenge to translators. The core principle of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory is that target text readers should share the same reaction as source text readers.Under the guidance of this theory, the translation of sci-tech text can not only convey the information in the source text accurately, but also achieve the most natural and closest equivalence between the source text and the target text.In view of this, two chapters from the book Artificial Intelligence:101 Things You Must Know Today About Our Future are selected for English-Chinese translation practice.First, the background and significance of the translation task, and an introduction to the source text are described.Secondly, the translation procedure is illustrated systematically.Thirdly,Functional Equivalence Theory and its application to the translation of English for science and technology are reviewed.Fourthly, based on Functional Equivalence Theory, multiple cases are analyzed and studied from lexical, syntactic and textual levels. Finally, the entire translation process, the findings and limitations of the report are concluded. The research results show that Functional Equivalence Theory plays a positive guiding role in the translation of English for science and technology.Under the guidance of this theory, several translation methods like literal translation, division and linear translation are applied to the translation of sci-tech text, and the equivalence of lexical, syntactic and textual levels are achieved, which may provide reference for the development of artificial intelligence in related fields.
