| This report is about the English-Chinese translation of chapters 3 and 4 of an academic text,Translation as Communication across Languages and Cultures, written by Julianne House,an German professor of translatology. In Translation as Communication across Languages and Cultures, the author Julianne House introduces some new trends in translation theory and the relationship between culture and translation. The book is rich in content and novel ideas, which can provide some reference value for the field of translation studies in China.According to Reiss’ s criteria for classifying text types,Translation as Communication across Languages and Cultures belongs to informative texts. In the process of translation, the translator finds that the translation practice material not only contains a large number of technical terms and long and difficult sentences, but also the text has a strict structure and meticulous logic. In view of the above-mentioned difficulties, the translator discusses specific solution techniques based on Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation as the guiding theory for the sake of conveying information and readability of informative texts. At the lexical level, the translator uses translation techniques such as literal translation, annotation and conversion in order to accurately convey the content of technical terms and disciplinary vocabularies. At the syntactic level, the translator makes comprehensive use of translation techniques such as division, combination, and voice conversion to ensure that the translation is authentic and natural, and conforms to Chinese expression habits. At the discourse level,on the basis of preserving the style of the source text, the translator discusses how to ensure cohesion and coherence in the process of translation.Through this translation practice, the translator has gained a deeper insight into the translation of academic texts, understanding that the translator should not only accurately convey the information of the source text, but also combine the translation purpose and the needs of the target readers to ensure that the translation is as natural and smooth as possible and acceptable to the target language readers. In addition, through translation practice, the translator has improved basic translation skills and accumulated relevant knowledge in English and Chinese, broadened her knowledge horizon, and gained a deeper understanding of the theoretical knowledge and practical application of semantic and communicative translation. Finally, the translator hopes that this translation project can provide relevant research materials and theoretical guidance for the study of translation in China,as well as some references for future translation work. |
