A good physical and mental rest is a prerequisite for maintaining a vibrant state of work.Nowadays, under the high-intensity and fast-paced working environment of “996”work schedule and “involution”,the phenomenon of overtime work has become the norm.Work fatigue and tiredness occur frequently, which has a negative impact on physical health and positive work status. Therefore, the topic of “micro break” has gradually attracted widespread attention among scholars.Research has found that social micro-break activities can bring more meaningful experiences at work and promote a sense of pleasure and relaxation in interpersonal interaction. Therefore, this paper focuses on the positive effects of social micro-break activities.Social micro-break activities refer to relatively short online or offline interactions with coworkers and others outside work while on the job.For example, short chats with coworkers about non-work-related topics and social network services connections with friends and family members or social media for checking personal social information.Previous studies on social micro-break activities were mainly analyzed from the between-person level. However, social micro-break activities will have a change in daily work content and mood state, and there will be some differences in the withinperson level. Therefore, this study focused on the daily within-person level and adopted a cross-level analysis to explore the impact of daily social micro-break activities on daily work engagement. From the perspective of resources(energy),this paper explores social micro-break activities based on the conservation of resources theory. Moreover, the focus is on the level of social activities,so the mutual relationship is explored through the dimension of relational energy.Relational energy refers to a heightened level of psychological resourcefulness(motivation, vitality, stamina, and vigor)generated from interpersonal interactions that enhances one’s capacity to do work. This study used a diary method to systematically investigate 79 subjects for five consecutive working days, and ultimately obtained 395 observations. The research used a multi-level path to analyze the data and the results show that:(1)daily social microbreak activities have a significant positive impact on daily work engagement;(2)daily relational energy mediated the relationship between daily social micro-break activities and daily work engagement;(3)the need to belong moderates the indirect effect of daily social micro-break activities on daily work engagement through daily relational energy. When the sense of belonging-need is low,the effect of daily social micro-break activities on daily work engagement through the mediation of daily relational energy is stronger.
