The purpose of this paper is to study the ways and meanings of constructing multimodal metaphors in children’s picture books.The thesis mainly starts from the three narrative elements of picture books,namely from the aspects of image,graphic relationship and book design.This study is based on two sets of theories: the structural theory of image metaphor from the perspective of cognition and the structural theory of multimodal metaphor from the perspective of systems function.Citing a large number of classic children’s picture books,this paper analyzes and details the applicable relationship and characteristics between the construction and theoretical basis of multimodal metaphor in the narrative creation of picture books.It is concluded that picture books,as a kind of creative sample with pictures and images,have the individuality of multimodal metaphor.The construction of multimodal metaphor in picture books mainly focuses on the mutual development of text and image,and maps text metaphor to the representation function,interaction function and composition function of image metaphor,so as to realize multimodal mapping and ensure the expression of metaphor to a greater extent.In addition to text symbols and image symbols,the use of media materials in the creation of picture books can also provide more modal mappings for the expression of metaphors in narrative,such as contact and sound.Based on this conclusion,the author created the children’s picture books "Grandpa’s White House" and "Grandma’s Dinner Table".With the expression of multimodal metaphor as one of the purposes,the author further studied the construction significance of multimodal metaphor in children’s picture books.This paper summarizes and demonstrates the structure and application of multimodal metaphor theory in children’s picture book corpus,which not only provides richer practical corpus materials for the study of multimodal metaphor,but also provides a new way for the construction of the theoretical system of narrative creation in children’s picture book.
