General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that the 1911 Revolution "profoundly changed the historical process of Chinese society, opened the gate of China’s progressive trend".Before the Revolution of 1911,China’s advanced intellectuals made full preparations for awakening the national consciousness of the people and propagating revolutionary theories.Zou Rong was an outstanding representative of them.In order to commemorate Zou Rong’s contribution to the Chinese Revolution,Sun Yat-sen posthumously named him "General of the Army" after the founding of the Republic of China. The founding leader Mao Zedong also recognized Zou Rong very much, believing that he not only put forward a simple democratic revolutionary program, but the fearless revolutionary spirit he showed in the "Soviet Report" is also worth learning from us Communists.Zou Rong’s revolutionary thought was formed in the historical period when the crisis of the Chinese nation and the society was deepening day by day. After the failure of the Reform Movement,Zou Rong began to explore a new way to save China. On the basis of in-depth analysis of the current situation of modern Chinese society,Zou Rong comprehensively absorbed Western bourgeois democratic revolutionary ideas, traditional Chinese patriotism and other revolutionary ideas of intellectuals, and formed his own revolutionary ideas.Historically,Zou Rong’s revolutionary thought sprang from the period of studying in Chongqing, initially formed in the period of studying in Japan, and basically formed in the period of staying in Shanghai. Its main contents can be summarized as the following five points.First, revolution is the inevitability of history, and it is a progressive practice to eliminate corruption and preserve goodness;secondly, the Qing government’s rule of corruption at home and servility to the outside world are the main reasons for the Chinese revolution.Thirdly, the modern national consciousness of the Chinese must be shaped through revolutionary education;fourthly, the revolution must fully rely on the masses;fifthly, the ultimate goal of the Chinese revolution is to establish a bourgeois "Republic of China".Zou Rong’s revolutionary thought has distinct progressiveness, bourgeois democracy, mass character and national consciousness of national independence. His expositions on the nature, causes, objects and driving forces of the Chinese revolution, and the future and significance of the revolution explored the basic problems of the Chinese bourgeois revolution, expanded the influence of the bourgeois-democratic revolution, and influenced the concept of modern Chinese revolution. The transformation and the outbreak of the 1911 Revolution played an important role. However, limited by Zou Rong’s own age and the social and historical conditions at that time,Zou Rong’s revolutionary thought also had certain limitations. For example, the one-sidedness of nationalist thought, the ambiguity of the understanding of the essence of capital imperialism, the blindness of borrowing from Western bourgeois revolutionary theory, etc.Under the background of the whole party’s continuous promotion of the great social revolution in the new era, studying Zou Rong’s revolutionary thought is useful for clarifying the inevitability of the occurrence and development of the Chinese revolution, deepening and expanding the horizon of revolutionary theoretical research, and refuting the wrong concept that revolution is "blood and sacrifice".
