This translation report contains two parts: a Chinese translation of an excerpt from India’s Pakistan Policy---How Think Tanks Are Shaping Foreign Relations, and a critical commentary that explores issues related to the translation of this excerpt, including the difficulties and problems that the translator came across and the strategies adopted to overcome them. The excerpt and its Chinese translation are attached to this report as an appendix. The critical commentary is composed of four parts: introduction to the project, theoretical framework, translation strategies and approaches, and conclusion.Aiming at studying the practical application of translation theories and strategies in the informational text translation process,it shows that translation theories and strategies have guiding significance for translation practice. The first part introduces the original text and the significance of the translation. The selected book is one that critically examines the role of think tanks as foreign policy actors. It looks at the origins and development of foreign policy think tanks in India and their changing relevance and position as agents within the policy-making process. As such it may be of interest and value to Chinese readers who are interested in international relations, foreign policy analysis, and South Asian politics. The second part discusses the theoretical framework of translation---the functional theories.Functional theories focus on the purpose of translation and consider it as a decisive factor in the translator‘s choice of translation methods and strategies. To achieve this end,the translator should follow three essential rules: the rule of the Skopos, coherence, and fidelity during the translation process. The third part discusses several translation strategies and approaches that are adopted in executing the translation project, such as semantic explication, turning nouns into verbs, semantic variation and adaptation, reinventing sentence structures, and literal translation. The last part is about the conclusion, which sums up what the translator has learned through the execution of this project as well as areas where further improvements can be made. |
