A Report On Escort Interpreting At Institute Of Occupational Medicine In The UK

Overseas escort interpreting is characterized by various translation and interpreting types,long interpreting hours,topics spanning a range of fields and many unexpected situations.Apart from the heavy translation and interpreting tasks,the responsibilities of interpreters often involve handling coordinating and communication,placing a great demand on their professional interpreting competence and psychological quality.Based on the author’s escort visit to Institute of Occupational Medicine(IOM)in Edinburgh of the UK as an interpreter for City A delegation,this report introduces the difficulties encountered in this task and analyzes how the author copes with the challenges via one or multiple strategies to facilitate communication under the framework of relevance theory and its three key concepts including cognitive context,ostensive-inferential model and optimal relevance.The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is an introduction of the background of the interpreting task,the significance and the structure of the report.In Chapter Two,the author describes the interpreting process,including long-term and short-term preparations before interpreting,difficulties encountered during the interpreting,and feedback after the interpreting practice.Chapter Three introduces relevance theory,its application in interpreting and the rationale for adopting relevance theory in this interpreting practice.Chapter Four elaborates how relevance theory helps improve interpreting performance through analysis of typical examples from three aspects.Chapter Five summarizes the interpreting practice and presents the reflections of the author.By analyzing the examples,the author hopes to share with other interpreters the guiding role of relevance theory on the overseas escort interpreting and consecutive interpreting,and provide some references for them to tackle the difficulties and achieve high-quality interpreting by deploying all the resources,so as to maintain the successful communication of relevant parties.
