| Redundancy is an inherent feature of language and it is also very common in interpreting. In the past, the researches on redundant information mostly focused on pragmatics, rhetoric, and translation, while the researches on interpreting were relatively few compared to the former three. In terms of the study in interpreting, especially in consecutive interpreting,it was mostly about the necessity of dealing with redundant information and coping tactics.Few experimental studies were involved. This thesis is an experimental report on the study of redundant information. The author takes student interpreters as research objects to analyze the impact of redundant information on the quality of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting, the correlation between students’ coping tactics and the interpreting quality, and the effect of coping tactics. The research is aimed at providing some ideas and methods for student interpreters and helping them to improve the quality of consecutive interpreting. The thesis firstly reviews the studies of redundant information at home and abroad. Then the author conducts the experiment based on Nida’s functional equivalence theory. As for the details, firstly the experimental material is divided into 8 meaning groups, and these meaning groups are again divided into 2 categories according to the density of redundant information, namely high redundant information density and low redundant information density. Then the interpreting scores of students are counted and also analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative analysis explores the impact of redundant information on the interpreting quality of student interpreters and the relationship between the use of coping tactics and the interpreting quality. The qualitative analysis selects specific examples to analyze the effect of using tactics.Through the experiment,it is found that limited by the experience, level, and other factors of student interpreters, the redundant information increases the amount of information needed to be processed, which has a negative impact on students’ interpreting quality.Student interpreters can identify the redundant information in the source language and use omission and generalization to deal with such information.By using appropriate coping tactics, students’ pressure on both source language understanding and target language output is reduced so that they can focus on transmitting the main information and thereby improve the quality of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting. |
